The golden glory of one of my favourite native trees; Acer campestre (Field Maple) today’s #oneadayplant . So often a component of the hedgerow and too rarely grown as a garden tree, it is fairly small and definitely suitable for most modern gardens. Where a lot of the non-Japanese type maples can be rather large trees, A. campestre rarely gets more than 10m (30’) tall and less than half of that in terms of crown width. It can also be grown as a hedging plant and as a multistemmed tree or shrub. Versatile! . While it is normally just a green leaf through the season, it takes on new visual life by colouring yellow and rusty orange in autumn. This looks particularly good against brilliant blue or moody grey skies. There is some variability in autumn colour from plant to plant presumably from seed raised variability rather than location, but could be either or both factors. I much prefer the pure buttery-yellow coloured forms. They glow with late afternoon sun. . It is a pretty, trouble free tree that naturally forms a globose/ovoid dense crown without the need for clipping or shaping. A form named ‘Streetwise’ is available that is a bit more upright and another named ‘Carnival’ is interestingly variegated. . Such an underrated native tree. Glorious at this time of the year, but always rather beautiful with small, palmate leaves and typical winged seeds of an Acer. . #acer #maple #fieldmaple #acercampestre #acercampestrestreetwise #tree #hedgerow #hedge #plants #shrubs #trees #gardening #autumn #autumncolour #yellow #rustygold #fallcolor #foliage #leaves #autumnleaves #fallleaves #iplantsman #gardens #landscape #gardeningadvice #gardeningtips #gardenista #plantingdesign #treesforgardens (at Crowborough, East Sussex) https://www.instagram.com/p/CG9q9wZgvh9/?igshid=px32kucgt2vg
