Trigger Warning: serial murder, turning human parts into object, domestic abuse mentioned, mention of tobacco and alcohol, mafia mentioned, implied harassmentânot violent but still, corrupt cops mentioned, impalement, tell me if I missed anything.
So I have a horror - romance concept Iâd like to write about someone in her early 20âs, Iâm still trying to decide the exact timeframe of the story, but has to be between 1920-1960, and her S/o is a serial killer and heir to a mafia family. So, FL from when she was young, lived in VERY dysfunctional home. Iâm thinking her parents and her older brother. Her dad is abusive and while her brother tries to shelter her from it as her older brother, it doesnât always work out. Deciding heâs had enough of his âstupid wifeâ and âdisgracefulâ son, he finds FL who is probably five at this point and attempts taking her with him, but intending to kill her as his final screw you before changing his name (because itâs fairly easy back then to do). It goes sideways because it was a rainy day that day and she ran. She kicked him when the one chance he had to get a grip back on her occurred and he fell down the muddy hill which becomes his end of days.
Personally, I was thinking he gets impaled on a tree OR a buck. I love the latter of the two best, but the tree sounds more realistic to happen.
Girl runs away and survives on pure adrenaline until she is found by the town over where he intended to kill her. A nanny and a boy, our ML to be, find her on an outing because we all know little boys like jumping in puddles. TBH any guy likes that⌠Anyway, our FL is taken by nanny to get cleaned up and of course the police are called because she is a missing child. She, however, doesnât get far because we all know policemen back then werenât as honest (or in other words these cops were in the mafiaâs pocket). It could have been many things like distance or her lack of knowledge as she WAS ONLY FIVE, but it could also be the don, the big boss, noticed his little heir liked playing with FL.
Almost too many coincidences happen. Like how the nanny and her husband had been trying for years, but clearly one of them didnât have the ability so fostering and later adopting FL is no issue. Furthermore since ML likes playing with FL itâs no issue with her work as his nanny. Was it a favor or just happenstance? Who would know, but that means ML will have known her since childhood. ((Iâd keep this as either a prologue or a few first chapters before a timeskip.))
Now an adult, FL is now in courtship with ML. Despite her parents being only a fisherman and a nanny, sheâs a decent bakery worker. Sheâs usually in the back in the kitchen, but sheâs there. Picture it now, itâs break time for her and one of her co-workers, probably an older gentleman based on the period, and he is reading the newspaper since they have to wake so damn early. He looks over to our young adult FL ânow see this in the paper, little lady? They found another one gone. You be careful if youâre out alone at night, or you might be next.â His hand knocks against the picture twice, inhaling his cigarette. âAnother,â sheâd mutter, concern laced with surprise. âLet me see.. oh no, I recognize that face. Didnât know his name, but I met him at the bar when me and (ML) went out two nights ago. He tried shamelessly flirting with me when ML got us refills on our drinks.â The old geezer cackles, âThe devil works harder they say. Iâd say thatâs karma. Little lady like you shouldnât worry about punks like that bothering you on a date. (ML) is a lucky young man.â
Then, she heads home where her sweet ML is waiting in her living room. She makes sure her mama knows heâs there and he laughs it off, âOf course, Iâd never just walk in, FL.â He winks and gives her a teddy bear. She remarks, âAh, another one, heâs cute though, this time he had a little top hat!â She kisses his cheek before softly exclaiming, âThank you, darling! You know how much I like teddy bears.â
Thereâs three other teddy bears in her room. All have a different accessories on them. She always loved teddy bears, but toys like teddy bears were always out of budget.
Those teddy bears? Human remains. All the missing pieces of corpses. ML does it all. Iâll give more in depth motivation behind his actions once I make a proper character file, but ML basically finds his targets through FL. Every single one of his victims FL has met, sometimes she may know them, other times itâs just a stranger sheâd never miss, but did something to gain MLâs attention. He takes their pieces and turns it into teddy bears for her and while he does have a way to make the bodies completely disappear, he likes them being found. Likes that FL knows theyâre dead. And she has no idea he gifts her the trophies.
This story would be one of those stories that flips between two characters povs. I like this style because I remember seeing it in a few books I read in the past. It would give you a glimpse of the horror, but always hide a detail or cliffhanger before an important detail is shown. Pop right back to the other pov, making you wonder what happened. You wonât find out until this character finds out.
I have a few ideas on how to end it. Some end in FLâs death, specifically in the happenstance of her being killed. Have him pin all the murders on her killerâŚ. Others have a happier end for her, die of old age as does he and have their child read the extra letter in the will and learn the truth. Have Dad tell their son âYou must continue my work, perhaps your future lady will like a trinket made from dedication.â
Personally would call this either âBloody Teddyâsâ for a more obvious title OR âBearings of Passionâ for the wordplay, but less obvious of a title.
Thatâs what Iâm willing to share of the conceptâŚ. For now. Iâll do character profiles soon.
