Derek Morgan/Penelope Garcia
For winning a 500 word ficlet in my 3k follower giveaway so long ago
Prompt:Â âJust something where he's trying to tell her he wants her and she's thinking it's just them being their regular flirty selves?â
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Heâd called Penelope so many times, but he was nervous this time, which was a first. Derek Morgan didnât get nervous calling women. But this wasnât like all the other times heâd called her. And Penelope was more than just a woman.
She answered on the second ring. âSpeak, my gorgeous. Is it another case to ruin both our nights-off?â
Derek grinned. âHey, baby girl. Nah, not a case. I was just checking to see if youâre almost ready to go. Iâm on my way over.â
There was a pregnant pause before she responded. âReady to go where? Do we have plans, D?â
Derek snort-laughed, nerves bubbling over. âUm. Yeah? Remember? Last Friday, you said I owed youâand I quote: âso many dinnersââand I said Iâd hit you up on my next night off? Well, itâs my next night off.â
âYeah, yeah, yeah, I know,â Penelope replied, her voice gaining speed the longer she talked. âItâs mine too. This explains why you kept reminding me. Are you telling me that was for real and not just our usual flirty banter? Because as much as I would love to have dinner with you, I was not being serious. I wouldnât ever demand something like that from you, babe. I wouldnât have asked you that way.â
He let out a sound that was almost a laugh. But it wasnât. Because this wasnât exactly a laughing matter. âI know you wouldnât. I wouldnât have made plans if I thought you were making demands. I thought it was more of a nudge.â
âA nudge? Derek. I donât nudge. I flat out say what I want.â
âDo you, though?â
She scoffed. âYes! Oh my Binary, have you ever known me to be cryptic?â
Derekâs stomach dropped. âNo, youâre a lot of things, but definitely not cryptic. Did I read this wrong? If I did, I can bow out gracefully, Penelope. I donât want to ruin what we have.â
âRead what wrong?!â she asked.
âIâm really sorry,â he began.
âNo, wait. Read what wrong? Are you saying there was even the tiniest tinge of truth in all our flirting?â
âAre you saying there wasnât?â He pulled into a parking spot outside her building and let the car idle.
âNo! Iâm definitely not saying that. Iâm just surprised is all.â
âSurprised why?â
âI dunno, D. Maybe because you donât beat around the bush either. And this entire thing feels like weâre both hitting that shrub within an inch of its life.â
He sighed. âOkay, so what do you want to do? Want me to keep driving so we can keep talking?â
âWell, we clearly need to talk. But we do so much of it on the phone. I want you to come over here and cook me dinner. And then we can talk.â
He laughed outright at that. âWhat do you have in your kitchen?â
âEnough, just get over here.â
âIâve been out front for a few minutes now,â he laughed.
âThen get up here, Morgan.â
âOh, youâre last-naming me now. Sounds serious. Itâs on, then?â
âOh itâs on, D. I mean, Morgan.â
âBring it, Garcia.â
âI mean, technically, youâre bringing it, because youâre the one coming to me.â
He chuckled and turned off the ignition. âSee you in a few minutes, doll.â
Draco Malfoy/Hermione Granger
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hermioneâs heart was in her throat as she walked into her apartment.
Draco would be here any minute, flooing into her living room and wrapping her up in his embrace. The embrace sheâd woefully had to leave earlier that morning at his flat. The embrace she hadnât been able to stop thinking about. The embrace that theyâd both agreed to keep between the two of them. At least for now.
It was, unfortunately, the very same embrace sheâd spent her lunch hour talking to Ginny about.
Yes, sheâd promised Draco that sheâd keep it to herself, but she couldnât be expected not to tell her best friend, right?
She sent her bag and cloak to the hall tree and hurried to the loo to check her reflection in the mirror. Sheâd found herself outdoors for the majority of the afternoon, and as such, her hair was indescribably enormous.
Blowing out a puff of air, she stuck her tongue out at her reflection and reached up to gingerly touch and attempt to tame the mess.
It was unbearably humid. That was to blame.
But Draco had assured her that he adored her hair, and had even spent the better part of last night with his fingers in it.
Perhaps it would endear her to him a bit more when she had to break the news that sheâd gone off and run her big mouth.
There was a crack in the living room, and she heard him call. âHullo?â
âIâll be right there!â she called.
She washed her hands and mumbled a quick little drying charm before going to join him.
Draco was looking as put together as he ever did. His hair was perfect, his clothing as well. And his face split into one of her favourite smiles when he saw her.
âYour hair is absolutely⌠Granger.â
âIs it absolutely me, or just absolutely?â she asked.
âBoth,â he replied, reaching for her and tugging her close. âCome here, I missed you.â
âMissed you too,â she replied, tilting her head up to kiss him. Â âDraco, I--â
âI have something to confess, Iâm afraid,â he began.
âOh?â she asked, her eyebrows raising and something akin to panic began to bloom in her belly. âYou do?â
âRelax, itâs nothing awful. I just⌠talking about you today.â
Pressing her lips together tightly to hide her smile, she inhaled and exhaled before replying. âOh?â
âYeah. To Zabini and Nott.â He shrugged. âApparently, this is harder to keep under wraps than I thought⌠I could practically write your name in the stars, Granger.â
Her smile broke through then and she started to laugh.
âWhat? Donât tell me you find me too silly now?â
âNot nearly⌠although I do find you incredibly silly, Malfoy.â
It was his turn to exclaim. âOh?â
âQuite. Â But not to worry, I also sort of blabbed about us today as well.â
âDid you? To whom? Donât tell me it was Potter--â
âOh no, not yet. It was Ginny.â
âHermioneâŚâ he began. âGinnyâs technically a Potter. If you told her, I can expect a howler from her loving husband any second now. Ah well, I suppose itâll be worth it.â
Hermione couldnât help but beam at the thought. âA howlerâs worth it?â
âWell, it really depends on whatâs in it, but given Potterâs vocabulary, I think Iâll be fine.â

Actual, sleeping on the ground in a sleeping bag, camping
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Darcy wiggled around, trying to get comfortable in the sleeping bag. Steve was doing a tremendous job of pretending she wasnât the loudest thing in the world at that moment.
âYou alright?â Steve asked, propping his hands behind his head.
âNo, thereâs a root or something jabbing me in the back.
âCâmere then,â he jutted his chin, and Darcy arched an eyebrow. âCome over there?â
âYeah. I didnât say gimme a lap dance, I said come over here.â
She rolled her eyes. âCome over where exactly.â
He unzipped his bag all the way and flipped it open, and then patted his chest with one hand. âIâm a pretty good pillow.â
Darcy blushed crimson, so she was sort of glad for the darkness at that moment.
âAre you serious?â
âIâm always serious,â he said in mock offense.
Rolling her eyes, she unzipped her bag and crawled over to him, spreading her sleeping bag turned comforter out over them, she curled up by his side, her head pillowed on his pecs.
âYouâre right, this is better. Are you sure you donât want the lapdance?â she teased.
âMaybe tomorrow morning,â he said. âI love getting a lapdance before breakfast.â
She huffed out a laugh and closed her eyes, trying not to have a mental image materialize right before she drifted off.
âActually, if youâre referring to the monster, you should call him âFrankensteinâs Monsterâ,â Darcy corrected him. âFrankenstein was the doctor.â
Loki closed his eyes for a long moment and sighed. âListen, you ineffable know-it-all, I made a mistake, obviously I meant Frankensteinâs Monster, not Dr. Frankenstein.â
Darcy wrinkled up her face in a most unflattering way and shook her head. âThatâs not what you said, Bunny Bread. And for your information, I am extremely eff-able.â
The earth woman Thor had spoken so highly of was like a silver carving knife on a ceramic plate. She was the ear-splitting screech of humans. She was perched on one of the stools in Dr. Bannerâs lab, and not a single person seemed to be as annoyed as Loki was.
Gods, she was magnificent.
âShould I define the word for you, darling?â he asked sweetly, his voice dripping with saccharine..
âItâs called a pun, sweetie-pie,â she retorted, batting her eyelashes. âA play on words? Do you have puns on Asgard? Youâve traveled the entire universe, havenât you? Donât tell me there arenât puns somewhere.â
âThere are puns. Excuse me for not recognizing it. Iâm used to intelligent, coherent ones.â
âHa! Got you. There is no such thing as a coherent pun.â
âA likely argument from someone whoâs never made a coherent pun in her life,â he shot back.
âOffense, sir. I take pride on my punnery.â
âGet thee to a punnery,â he countered, arching an eyebrow. âBehold. A coherent, yet intelligent pun.â
She scoffed. âBarely.â
âI believe it still counts though.â
âCounts like your face,â she muttered.
Loki laughed aloud. âCould it be that Iâve bested you? The great Darcy Lewis, who bested my own brother in combat?â
âI bested your brother with a gun that shoots electricity. You donât have to be smart or coherent to wield one of those, Lokes.â It sounded like a threat, and the flash in her eyes certainly felt threatening.
âI never said you werenât smart,â he reminded her.
âFine, intelligent.â
âI never said that either.â
âSaid what?â
âThat you werenât intelligent.â
She didnât answer, simply swung her legs on the , and looked intently at her phone.
âDarcyâŚâ he ventured, moving a bit closer. âDarcy? Darling, Iâm sorry if I hurt your feelings.â
âThat isnât an apology.â
Loki huffed indignantly. âIt is too. I said I was sorry.â
âYou said you were sorry if you hurt my feelings. Which puts the labor on me to forgive you, and you can sidestep the bigger issue at hand.â
âWhich is?â
âThat you called Frankensteinâs monster âFrankensteinâ and fucked up royally.â She grinned in a very self-assured way. Loki pressed his lips together and shook his head, all the while, she tittered proudly every so often.
âIt was a mistake,â he began.
âStill said it.â
âA slip of the tongue.â
She waggled her eyebrows and winked. âIâll show you a slip of the tongue.â
He chuckled. âOh really? Please do.â
âWhat?â she asked.
âShow me a slip of the tongue, Darcy.â
âCan I embroider that on a pillow?â she asked, hopping up from the stool and making as if she was about to leave. There was no way Loki was allowing her to leave after dropping a flirtatious bomb in the room. Â Heâd let her do it too many times before not to demand an explanation now.
âShow me a slip of the tongue,â he said.
âReally?â she asked.
âReally.â
âItâs okay if I show you?â
âIâm asking,â he countered.
âOkay. You asked for it.â
âI already insisted that I--â He stopped talking abruptly as Darcy kissed him and thus succeeded in both showing him a slip of the tongue and shutting him up all in one go.
He was wrong before. She wasnât magnificent, she was exquisite.
Darcy sniffled again, bringing her hand up to cover her mouth as she coughed. âSorry,â she said for the billionth time.
âYou donât have to keep apologizing, Darce,â Steve reminded her. âItâs not your fault that youâre sick.â
âI know, but I ruined our date night,â she whined, poking out her bottom lip.
âListen, I know how to save it,â he replied, rising to his feet and heading out to the kitchen. âLet me show you my special recipe for hot cocoa.â He began to pull out ingredients and she snorted when she saw the instant cocoa packet.
âYour secret recipe? You sure itâs not the intellectual property of some anonymous milk maid in Switzerland?â
He laughed. âOkay yeah. I know itâs Swiss Miss, but I add extra marshmallows.â
Puppy Love
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
âDid you lock up?â Blaise asked as they apparated down to the street below.
âShit. No,â Ginny replied. âIâll go back and do it.â
âDonât worry, Iâll do it.â Blaise apparated with a loud pop before she could argue.
Sighing, she leaned against the brick wall behind her, bringing one leg up to keep her balance.
If it was up to her, sheâd rather have a night in for Valentineâs. She sort of hated big doâs ever since sheâd embarrassed herself back in school with Harry.
She took a deep breath and closed her eyes before letting it go again. Blaise didnât care about that. If he remembered, he had the good manners to never ever mention it. Plus, she loved him. And he loved going out. So she could get on board with it as well.
Besides, heâd gotten them dinner reservations at their favorite Quidditch bar. Â Usually, they didnât have to get reservations, but since it was Valentineâs, Blaise had figured it was better safe than sorry.
She drummed her fingers on her forearm where she had both arms folded over her middle.
A small whining sound drew her attention.
She glanced down in the direction of the sound, immediately falling to her knees beside what looked like the saddest dog sheâd ever seen. Her heart felt as if it was cracking open, old wounds from their previous dogâs passing combined with the desire to help this one all rolled up into one big leaking mess.
âOh no, puppers!â she cooed, her voice immediately taking on that tone that most people reserved for newborn babies.
The dog was shaking, and it had matted fur. There was no collar, which was no big surprise, given the state he was in. âOh baby, I wonât hurt you,â she murmured, holding out her hand and nearly bursting into tears when the dog flinched but moved shakily toward her.
Blaise apparated back with a pop, and the dog cowered.
âWhat-- where--â he spotted Ginny kneeling, and promptly took stock of the situation, dropping to a crouch beside her. âWhoâs that?â
âA scared stray, I thinkâŚâ she held her hand steady in front of her, and presently, the dog moved towards her and sniffed her hand. It then tilted and allowed her to pet it behind the ears.
âWhat do you want to do?â Blaise asked.
âWhat do you think?â she asked.
âI was hoping youâd say that. I think Harveyâs stuff is still up there in the closet.â
She shot him a smile. âDonât apparate, it scares the puppy.â
Harvey had been gone for almost a year. And after heâd passed on, Ginny didnât think sheâd ever be able to open her heart up for any more animals. But the second she saw this shaking little mess in the alley, she knew.
Sheâd just had to heal a bit.
It took very little to coax the quivering pile of mats and bones into her arms, and as the dog seemed to collapse against her, she and Blaise made their way back up to their apartment.
Seemed like sheâd get the Valentineâs Day she wanted after all.

a/n:Â Soulmate AU where one person asks a question and their soulmate weirdly knows the answer theyâre looking for
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Darcy had given up long ago that anyone would ever give her question the right answer.
Well, that wasnât true. Bruce had gone into a really long explanation as to why dogs howled at the moon. It wasnât the moon they were howling at. They were just lonely and seeking out other dogs. There was more to it than that, but even as he was talking animatedly about it, she glazed over. He hadnât been right.
Sheâd asked her question to every single person sheâd ever met and the closest anyone had ever gotten to a correct answer was Tony Starkâs âHell if I know.â
It wasnât that difficult a question really.
Why does the dog howl at the moon?
The issue she usually ran into was the odd person trying to explain off the top of their head the nature of those fluffy examples of the canine persuasion. But people who did that (Bruce included) werenât actually answering the right question.
It wasnât âWhy do dogs howl at the moon?â, it was âWhy does the dog howl at the moon?â More of a theoretical opening for a lively debate than anything else.
If someone wasnât trying to school her on the biology of dogs, then they usually figured out it was her soulmate question and gave her a sad smile and a small shake of their head.
When Captain America himself, Steve Rogers, brought his BFF in to formally meet everyone, she was expecting a couple of confused looks once again. Â Sheâd seen Steve around, but hadnât ever gotten around to asking him her question because in what universe was she that lucky? Same went for his Buff Friend Forever, James Barnes. If anything, dude was hotter than Cap. And that was saying something.
When Steve and James approached her work station, the former held out his hand tentatively. âHi, Darcy is it? Iâve seen you, but weâve never actually met. Iâm Steve.â
She smiled sweetly and accepted his hand. Bucky was next, but he didnât offer his hand, he kept both of them folded in front of him as he nodded to her in greeting. âDarcy.â
âBarnes,â she nodded in reply. âHey, do you guys mind if I ask you a random question?â
Steve chuckled. âNot at all.â
James merely shrugged.
âWhy does the dog howl at the moon?â
Steve chuckled softly, shaking his head, but James blurted out an answer so sarcastically nonsensical, it almost didnât sound real.
âBecause he knows the dark side is made of cheese, and the dogâs lactose intolerant, therefore, the moon is a threat.â
Darcyâs mouth hung open and she stared over at him.
Jamesâ mouth quirked up in the corner. âI take it that was the right response?â
She nodded slowly and pretended not to notice Steve trying to stifle a grin as he stepped away from his friend. How he then shot Jane and Tony a look.
âDonât be so obvious, Stevie,â James quipped, relaxing his stance. He tilted his head towards his now red-faced friend. âSomeone around here thought one of use might answer your question, but I promise. That answer was genuine.â
She smiled, flashing her teeth before looking down at her hands.Â
"Iâve got a question for you, too,â James began.
âShoot,â she said, beaming.
âWhyâd the chicken cross the road?â
Her grin widening, she replied. âThe chickenâs an Old God and the road is relatively new. The chickenâs always travelled that way and isnât letting a road stop her. So the answer is âbecause you canât teach an Old God new tricksâ.â
âHot damn,â James murmured.
âI have some follow up questions for you if youâve got time.â
His smile lit up his entire face. âSweetheart, for you, Iâve got nothing but.â
When she wears YOUR flannel shirt
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
âHey babe,â her face appeared on his screen and Bucky couldnât stop himself from grinning. They had these skype calls as much as possible, but he wasnât ever any less thrilled to see her.
âHey there dollface,â he replied, his cheeks already starting to ache from the grin that wouldnât stop widening. âMiss you like crazy.â
âMiss you too,â she said, poking out her bottom lip. âMiss you so much that I went and found something of yours so I could wear it.â
Now that he was looking, that plaid pattern on her shirt seemed awfully familiar. And then she stood up and stepped back from the computer screen, twirling in his flannel shirt that she was wearing as a dress. The hem fluttered, showing just enough bare thigh to make his mouth water.
He knew two things to be true: she looked fucking hot in his shirt, and quarantine was the worst thing ever.
