Put your lovin where your mouth is,
Your sugar talking isn’t working tonight.
Ya your paragraphs mean shit to me,
it’s verbatim what you said last week.
It’s your seventh last chance, honey, get your sorry ass to mine.

i really cherish crisis core as an absolute tragedy — as in, there was nothing to be done there that would really "fix" things, because everything was already doomed way before its protagonist got involved in the situation™ — but i also really think (almost) every single character in that game could have followed the motto of the game itself (men cry not for themselves, but for their comrades) and had a good crying session
not that it would, perhaps, have solved anything at all and could've actually made everything much worse (maybe genesis would still have ruthlessly trashed sephiroth's mom to his face, through sephiroth's tears and begged for a cure also through tears, only feeding jenova more of the kind of despair it latches onto) but maybe it could've been a way to communicate how messed up things were without using words
for example, the training room incident
scratch or not, genesis was still wounded by getting too ahead of himself and forcing his sword against angeal's standard (fragile as hell) sword in the heat of the moment
this is scary as fuck; it could have been more than a scratch and also it's not fun to see your comrade suffer actual damage during an otherwise fun time
angeal immediately worries, sephiroth is quiet, and genesis... dismisses the entire thing as being a problem for some reason (maybe not wanting to look "weak" in front of sephiroth, but who knows, really?)
if genesis had just started bawling his eyes out because the "scratch" stung like complete hell, or angeal started to cry out of worry or if sephiroth immediately started taking the blame for it, well... maybe it wouldn't have solved things, but putting the feelings out would have helped with processing their situation better
if sephiroth had full on sobbed with body trembles and all against angeal's shoulder, when genesis deserted, maybe angeal would still have deserted anyway to follow after genesis, but possibly with the understanding/reminder that sephiroth cares way more than he shows
out of everyone, we see zack bawling his eyes out because of angeal, and aerith comforting him and i'm pretty sure that having that kind of presence in his life, someone who doesn't judge you on your grief, even if she sees the idea of death differently, helped zack move forward with living and carrying on angeal's values
i'm pretty sure that, out of everyone in the cast, zack is probably the only one to cry openly in the presence of another, and it kinda does wonders for him (grief still sucks a lot)
so it's like... man, the possibilities that could emerge from anyone else in the narrative just... breaking down
like, let sephiroth cry for angeal (and genesis) when asked if he's lost weight, let him communicate the effect of being overworked while his support system was missing
let angeal bawl his eyes out because he's failing at helping someone he cares about because he has no cure for degradation
let genesis cry at losing angeal but not even realize why he's crying or even who he even is, anymore, that angeal had to die for him to question things
and let cloud cry, too.... he joined shinra aiming to be a SOLDIER but failed greatly
let them fucking cry lol
angeal hewley (cc) is just cloud strife (ac) in a different font, and it always baffles me to see people calling him a hypocrite for the way he responds to what's very obviously mental illness hitting him in the guts repeatedly, but never say quite the same about cloud, someone who also has mental illness hitting him in the guts repeatedly — and who instead gets called edgy or cringe or ooc
an essay i would write if i had the energy and motivation, and an essay people would probably not read (because my reach is small)
i think we need to talk more about the fact that the northern crater is stupidly close to modeoheim, geographically speaking, and that, honestly, it's not the only place in gaia with a pretty neat high concentration of mako/the lifestream or closeness to it (see: the whole mideel area + what happened to rhadore just southeast of there)
like, sephiroth's body could've ended up anywhere else (though you can argue it's convenient for him to end up in the place jenova originally fell in) but it ended up not that far away from where angeal last was and the place he was likely buried at (shinra doesn't bring bodies back, see: sebastian and essai)
so it's like... if you want to kindly follow my delusional line of thought here, after death sephiroth almost went home — as in, not his hometown or the place he grew at, but where the heart is — almost made it there... only to be once again taken over by jenovan ideas of revenge against humanity, being the chosen one and planetary destruction
then, of course, cloud and co. go there and the whole place seph's eternally resting at kinda falls apart, weapons awake, etc
but the place cloud pops up next when carried by lifestream currents from there? stupidly close to where banora used to be
and sure, gaia is a relatively small planet, but man
there seems to be a theme with sephiroth — and sephiroth-associated people carrying his cells, namely cloud — almost achieving happiness and closure, almost getting to keep what was once good, almost returning to a metaphorical home after death, only to just... never really make it there
oh! and not to mention that crisis core' final dungeon has, somehow, a direct connection to the northern continent — you can see emerald weapon there by the way :) — and even though genesis doesn't stay there, (he goes to rest under midgar if i recall it correctly) at some point he was there, so it's like... another one to this list
i still need you

Honor & Dreams
Fandom: Final Fantasy VII
Word count: 1863
Rating: G
Characters: Zack Fair & Kunsel
Summary: Upon returning from a mission, Zack drags Kunsel out of bed and spars with him before the sun is even out.
Notes: written for @zackfair-week Day 2: Ideals/ Mission
~*~*~*~*~*~
“Why do you work so hard?” Kunsel asked him one day.
They were doing their morning drills—a hundred laps followed by a sparring session. Kunsel was a year older and had been in SOLDIER for another year longer, but it hadn’t taken Zack long to catch up to him. In fact, Zack had earned the envy of many of his fellow soldiers, older and otherwise, since his recruitment. Being thirteen with an innate physical prowess, Zack often bested even some of the seasoned warriors. When it was announced that he would be mentored by none other than the esteemed First-Class Angeal Hewley, many of the other recruits had looked at him with a mixture of bitterness and awe. But not Kunsel. His self-proclaimed right-hand man had only clapped his shoulder and said great job and good luck, don’t waste your chance. Still, two years since his appointment as Angeal’s pupil and having done daily practices together for almost as long, Kunsel couldn’t seem to keep his curiosity quiet any longer.
