He used to really like book stores. As a kid they felt like his only escape from training or long-winded history talks from his father and provided a rather solid excuse of education to keep him from being scolded for running away from the responsibilities of being the only child in a household upheld by honor and tradition. To this day he still thanks his mother for keeping secret all of the times he was found asleep in their study with a book balanced in his palms, but being thankful only goes so far when it feels like the only moments he was ever truly protected from the life he was forced to live. He used to like book stores when he had someone to comb the titles with and it felt normal to visit from time to time when classes ended earlier than expected. Itās been too long since heās smelled the pages of a hard cover, a first edition decades older than he was, too long since heās stepped foot in a shop purely out of leisure, and he half wishes this time was different, that when he opens the door itās just to lazily nod to the person at the front desk before getting lost in the isles like every other, normal customer.Ā He closes his eyes when the clang of the door echoes behind him, imagining it, the ghosts of normalcy that he had once. Itās a mourning that he canāt meet with tears anymore. Opening his eyes at the faint rustle of another person, likely taking notice of him, he turns towards the sound and makes his way to stand before the front desk. The composure he wears like armor, visibly has its dents and dings. It noticeably takes some time for his rigid posture to feel animate, like a key turned somewhere in his spine and he finally lined up with time and space where they stood.Ā āYou should really work on making better friends, ones that wonāt wave your scent under the nose of a threat the moment they feel vulnerable. However, I canāt say Iām too surprised, loyalty doesnāt look to be up your alley.āĀ
