@ferretsonice ah, yes! I’m autistic. I know! I probably should have used “developmentally disabled,” I guess. I’m calling him autistic here (and I did say “or an autistic cousin,” meaning a condition very similar to autism) because a) this is fantasy, and magic exists, and a magic thing was done to him, there really is no real-world equivalent so why not pick the closest option and b) there’s a difference between a character the author INTENDED to be autistic and one that just happens to be coded autistic or developmentally disabled. I would say that Wen Ning is very autistic coded! In-universe explanations of why he is that way are important, yes, but also don’t really change the way he moves through the world, which is what I’m specifically talking about here.
Does that make sense? It’s about coding. Not about why. Also I can very much see kind of a “symbolic” aspect to the soul snatching -- a common autistic experience is seeming “normal” until you’re a toddler or four or so, and then “regressing,” which is exactly when Wen Ning had his accident. It’s honestly impossible to tell who he would be as a person without the soul snatching, the accident left him disabled and in a way that reads very very developmentally disabled, “autism” is the best way I could think to describe it when it doesn’t have a real world equivalent.
