@ferretsonice ah, yes! Iām autistic. I know! I probably should have usedĀ ādevelopmentally disabled,ā I guess. Iām calling him autistic here (and I did sayĀ āor an autistic cousin,ā meaning a condition very similar to autism) because a) this is fantasy, and magic exists, and a magic thing was done to him, there really is no real-world equivalent so why not pick the closest option and b) thereās a difference between a character the author INTENDED to be autistic and one that just happens to be coded autistic or developmentally disabled. I would say that Wen Ning is very autistic coded! In-universe explanations of why he is that way are important, yes, but also donāt really change the way he moves through the world, which is what Iām specifically talking about here.Ā
Does that make sense? Itās about coding.Ā Not about why. Also I can very much see kind of aĀ āsymbolicā aspect to the soul snatching -- a common autistic experience is seeming ānormalā until youāre a toddler or four or so, and thenĀ āregressing,ā which is exactly when Wen Ning had his accident. Itās honestly impossible to tell who he would be as a person without the soul snatching, the accident left him disabled and in a way that reads very very developmentally disabled,Ā āautismā is the best way I could think to describe it when it doesnāt have a real world equivalent.
