Unless you have your ear to the ground of Spain’s underground music scene, you probably haven’t the music of Fernando Junquera, who, in addition to serving time in various Valencian obscurities, has recorded four solo albums under the name Negro. Hopefully, his latest release, the shimmering Clase Mediawill change that. Clase Media, with its combination of floaty atmospherics and lightning fast fretting,is a refreshing take on the increasingly popular guitar soli record, and feels, for the non-Spaniard, like you’re getting let in on one of Mediterranean music’s best-kept secrets. Negro is one to watch.
Uzumaki—Self-Titled(cassette)
Uzumaki CS [BPR027] by Uzumaki
A Galician band similar to Big Black or Scratch Acid. Heart-rending vocals following the best of the Spanish punk tradition. They surprised me a lot, I hadn’t heard anything like that for a long time.
Ry Cooder—Paris, Texas(OST)
I think here the soundtrack is as important as the movie itself. It was the tune of a night time show on Spanish national TV when I was 9 years old, and that blues guitar line always made me fly into a dreamlike state. It just never left my head and it’s become my own OST ever since.
Leadbelly—Last Sessions Vol.1
I had already heard his guitar and vocals songs, but this album was just so moving. I used to sing some choruses down the street. It's one of my favourite blues albums. Interestingly, I later learned that it was also one of the favourite albums of my teenage idol, Kurt Cobain.
Fred K. Prieberg—Musik und Macht
I found this book many years ago in the village where my grandparents lived and it fascinated me. It turns out that my uncle bought it in Madrid in 1977. It talks about a very futuristic kind of music and also about the first electronic recordings and instruments. From it I discovered many compositions by musicians that fascinate me (Stockhausen, Schaeffer, Sckryabin, Varèse, etc.)
Jordi Pujol Baulenas—Jazz in Barcelona 1920-1965
Thanks to this book I discovered how jazz was introduced and developed in Spain. It also focuses on the figure of one of my favourite pianists, Tete Montoliu.
Luis García Berlanga—The Executioner
A classic of Spanish cinema. A tragicomedy that I believe has influenced my sense of black humour that occasionally sneaks into the titles of my songs and during my shows. A good portrait to get to know Spain and the Spanish people.
John Fahey—America
I got to know Fahey’s music when I discovered Hitomi, an album that he had just released in 2000. It was very difficult, almost unpleasant, but after a while I got to listen to Americaand from then on he became one of my lifelong influences. A magically dark revolutionary, a brilliant oppressor that just catches you and doesn’t let you escape. One of my favourite songs is on this album and it sums it up perfectly. Unbeatable, immortal.
Alessandro Cortini
I met him thanks to Joni (Burka for Everybody Records). This guy really had an impact on me because he’s doing the kind of music that describes our present time, but also the immediate future. Ambient drone music with synthesizers that matches our dystopian times, the fictitious reality we live in and the collapse of the world. I highly recommend to listen to Forse 1. For science fiction lovers.
Sonic Youth—Evol
It blew my mind as a teenager. In my opinion, here the concept of imagination and sound lives within the guitars of Ranaldo and Moore. The dreamy halo that people say I have probably comes to some extent from albums like this one and Daydream Nation. Also, how I use harmonics probably comes from the New York band as well. Essential.
Sabicas
One of my favourite flamenco guitarists. One of the first ones to travel to the United States (around the 50s, I believe) and, therefore, to internationalise flamenco music. It's just amazing, it's a musical legacy that our country should both respect and know about. This is one of the videos that impressed me the most. I also recommend listening to an LP released by ABC Records in the 60s called Artistry in Flamenco. Incredible!
Derek Bailey—Playbacks
I listened to this album by Derek Bailey circa 2000 or 2001. I got to know his music thanks to bands like Gastr del Sol. With this album I discovered guitar improvisation and he instantly became my reference as a guitarist and as a musician in that genre. I recommend that you listen to the first solo recording, Solo Guitar Volume 1, or any recordings by him. Derek invented a musical language with a unique technique. Unmistakable.
