Born the 22nd of April 1451, Isabella was the only daughter to kind John II of Castile. Though said to be a beauty, with features handed down from Catherine of Lancaster – her grandmother – it was unwavering determination and critical thinking that lead to her rise in power.
In 1469 she secretly married her second cousin, Ferdinand II of Aragon, undermining her half-brother, King Henry of Castile. Upon his death in 1474, she proclaimed herself Queen of Castile and ignited a bitter civil war with her niece Joanna – who married King Afonso V of Portugal. In 1479, Isabella and Ferdinand would reign victorious and go on to unit the once broken kingdom of Spain.
Isabella eventually turned her focus to Granada where she ended the Reconquista in 1492. On January 2nd of that year, her and her King entered the city to receive the keys. That same year, they agreed to provide ships to the infamous Christopher Columbus and fund his expedition west.
She and Ferdinand had five children in their 35 years of marriage – Isabella of Asturias (1470-1498), John, prince of Asturias (1478-1497), Juana of Castile (1479-1555), Maria of Aragon (1482-1517), and Catherine of Aragon (1485-1536). At the age of 52, in 1504, Isabella died and would be joined 11 years later by her husband. Their tomb rest in the Royal Chapel of Granada.
