Lyrium Wishes Sneak Peek #2
That next morning, when Kagome opened the door to leave for the market, she would've tripped on something left on the doorstep had she not caught herself at the last second.
There on the ground was a bouquet of white flowers, wrapped in expensive, dark blue silk.
Curious, Kagome bent to scoop them up and study them closely. They were pretty, and very pristine with not a mark to be found on the petals. There was no note to be found after a quick survey, however, which she thought to be strange.
Opening the door back into the manor, Kagome stuck her head inside to call for Fenris. It took him mere moments before he was coming down the stairs in a lazy jog.
When he saw her still halfway through the door holding the bouquet, his footsteps slowed. One dark eyebrow lifted at her, questioning.
“Look what I found on the doorstep!” Kagome grinned, holding up her prize to give it a little shake. “I think someone has a secret admirer.”
Fenris let out a soft scoff at her suggestive tone, lips twitching. “You find flowers and presume they’re for me?”
“Well, it is your doorstep,” Kagome teased. It was with a slow, admirable once-over of his body that she continued to say, “You’re very handsome, Fenris, it’s a wonder you haven’t had your share of admirers wanting to woo you.”
“Is it truly?” Fenris murmured with a touch of sarcasm, trying to fight the warmth rising to his cheeks. He sent a meaningful look to the corpse still propped up in the corner of the entryway.
Kagome laughed, the sound bright and her eyes dancing as she shook her head at him. She glanced at the bundle of flowers in her hand then, considering, before bringing it up to her face.
She’d barely got it within a foot to her face before her nose scrunched and her whole face followed suit. Kagome sneezed, once, twice, and a third time, before holding the bundle away from her. “Ah. I think I’m allergic.”
Fenris coughed to cover his amusement. “What a shame,” he said after a moment, managing to sound droll.
Blinking wet eyes at him, she raised a brow. “Jealous?” she teased.
The effect was somewhat ruined by her reddened nose and splotchy cheeks.
“Not in the least,” he said, and strolled over to pluck the flowers from her hands. “Should I go ahead and toss these out with the rubbish, then?”
Sniffling, Kagome grinned at him, and from that alone he knew she didn’t believe him in the slightest. “If you would, thanks."
