He remembers that film so clearly, the excitement of it, seeing the older man and the younger man kissing and embracing. Watched it on television late one night when his parents were out, his heart pounding in case they came back and found him in front of it. Â

Seeing that film could have gone either way. So to speak. Usual miserable bloody outcome for the gay character so if you paid attention to the plot it could fuck you up quite badly, make you think that's how your life would be. On the other hand, the straight love affair got fucked up too; equal opportunities ahead of its time. And there was a sort of dignity in Finch's character, even at the end, where he's talking straight to camera. Acknowledging that the young man hadn't been what he was looking for all his life, saying âHe's not it ... but something. We were something.â Â
Somehow, Lestrade hadn't been depressed by the ending; still too excited by the kiss and thinking It's not just me then. Shit, how could he have forgotten that? One of those moments of recognition that changes the whole course of your life.

holyfant's comments: This is a really lovely little fic that gives us an insight into a character that is unbelievably underused and underappreciated in this fandom: Ella. The story gives us short but tantalising glimpses into Ella's professional credo, the way she handles being intimidated by Mycroft, her relationship with John as a client, and her wary association with Anthea that blossoms slowly over time. All of these elements are treated with a deft touch that makes Ella emerge as a well-defined character. Impressively, fengirl88 was able to make a full person out of the short amount of screen time Ella gets in canon. The prose of the story is succulent and tight, and makes this short story an absolute delight to read. I picked this particular story also because it's part of a series that comprises (so far) 4 other stories â and all of them are absolute treats, to be read and savoured slowly. Run, don't walk!
