Soothe
At the request of @aeriamamaduck: Fenris is sick (and grumpy), but Eden takes care of him anyways. Featuring Ezra Hawke (Edenâs twin) and his sometimes-successful home remedies.
Eden woke up to a blast of cold air.
She shivered and reached out for the covers only to find them pulled to the other side of the bed.
âFenris?â she murmured as she lifted herself off the pillow. âYouâve taken all the covers.â
A low groan came from the cocoon of blankets beside her. Â Eden furrowed her brow as she nudged down the blankets, trying to see just where the blankets ended and Fenris began. Â âAre you all right?â she asked.
âNo,â he said. Â âI feel terrible.â
âAww,â Eden said as she pulled the covers away from Fenrisâsaeri face. Â âWhatâs wrong?â
Fenris sneezed. Â âCold,â he muttered. Â âThe sickness and the feeling.â
âJust wait here, love,â Eden said before leaning over to kiss him on the forehead. Â âIâll get you something to make you feel better.â
âDonât bother,â he said. Â âIâm sure I just need some rest.â
âOf course you need rest,â Eden said as she got out of bed and wrapped her robe around her. Â âBut you also need something to help you feel better.â
Fenris sat up and slowly turned towards her. Â âHawke, just forget it,â he replied. Â âIâll be fine.â
âI know you will, but that doesnât mean Iâm going to stand by and do nothing.â
She heard Fenris groan as she left the room and hurried downstairs and smiled to herself. Â Despite his protests, she knew that Fenris would benefit from someone taking care of him today.
âMorning, E,â Ezra said as Eden entered the kitchen.
âGood morning yourself,â Eden said. Â âDo you have anything that might help with a cold?â
âFeeling under the weather?â
âNoâitâs Fenris,â she said. Â âDo you mind if I take the day off? Â I want to make sure he actually rests up.â
Ezra arched an eyebrow at her. Â âDo I mind?â he asked. Â âEden, Iâve been telling you to take a break for weeks now.â
Eden had a vague memory of Ezra telling her to take a day off, but it was a comment that sheâd pushed aside in favor of the more important things she had to do. Â âAnd now you finally get your wish,â she said.
âIf I knew that Fenris getting sick would get you to finally rest, I wouldâve told him to fake a cold ages ago.â
âFortunately for you, he has a real one,â Eden said drily. Â âDo we have anything that could help with that?â
âHmm,â Ezra mused as he opened the cupboards. Â âI have a few things that might workâgive me a minute.â
Ezra had always had an interest in medicine. Since Bethany had been taken to the Circle, he had learned how to treat common and non-serious ailments: a relief, since he and Eden had enough chronic conditions between them to make any healer sigh in exasperation. Â His cough syrup and calming tea had helped Eden through more than one rough spot over the past several years and even though Andersâs clinic wasnât far away, she was glad to have a healer at home again. Â Besides, going to Darktown on the cusp of an anxiety attack wasnât a sustainable idea.
âAh, here we go,â he said. Â He took a bottle from one of the cabinets and handed it to her. Â âHeat some water and add a few spoonfuls,â he said. Â âAdd some honey for good measureâitâs pretty disgusting, but itâll help his throat and his nose and give his immune system a gentle kick in the ass. Â Give him more in the afternoon if he still feels shitty.â
âYouâre the best,â Eden said as she wrapped her brother in a one-armed hug. Â âLet me know if thereâs anything I can do for you.â
âJust take care of Fenris and enjoy your time off,â Ezra replied. Â âThatâs more than enough.â
âThank you,â Eden said, setting the bottle down on the counter before reaching for the kettle. Â âI suppose youâre going to see Sebastian first?â she asked.
âNaturally,â Ezra replied. Â âHe lives closest. Â It wouldnât make sense to head down to Lowtown only to come all the way back to get him.â
âOf course,â Eden said as she filled the kettle with water. Â âAnd this has nothing to do with the two of you getting to spend some time alone together, right?â
Ezra flushed. Â âThatâs certainly an upside of it,â he admitted.
âWell, Iâm sure heâll be just as excited for that time alone as you are,â Eden said. Â âI know you want to give him time, but with the way heâs been looking at you, I doubt heâll need much more of it.â
âI hope youâre right, E,â Ezra replied. Â âI just hope I donât embarrass myself.â
âIf you do, thereâs no one better to do it in front of,â Eden said. Â âIt might be a little awkward at first, but he wonât ever tease you about it.â
âIs this about the time you answered the door in a bedsheet and it was Sebastian instead of me or Amaryllis?â
Eden flushed. Â âIt might be,â she said. Â âAt least he didnât mention it to anyone else. Â Iâm not sure Varric wouldâve ever let me hear the end of it, but Sebastian hasnât breathed a word.â
âTrue,â Ezra said. Â âSpeaking of attire, should I change my shirt? Â I think I wore this one the last time I saw Sebastian.â
âEzra, please tell me youâre not about to go out fighting in nothing but this,â she said, gently tugging at the sleeve of his thin shirt.
âAh fuck, thatâs rightâstabbing is a thing that could happen,â he muttered. Â âHeâll see the sleeves, though, and he might know itâs the same one.â
Eden sighed. Â Her brother was overanalyzing the situation, but she knew better than to talk him out of changing his shirt. Â If that was what he needed to feel a little less nervous, then so be it. Â âWear a blue one,â she said. Â âIt brings out your eyes.â
âPerfect,â Ezra said, already removing his shirt as he ran upstairs. Â âThanks, E!â
Eden shook her head and smiled as she took a mug out of the cupboard. Â Her brother might be the more organized and rational of the two of them, but having a crush always made him a little frazzled. Â She could only hope that today would ease his anxiety around Sebastian instead of increasing it.

A while later, Eden carried the diluted medicine into hers and Fenrisâs room.
Fenrisâs brow furrowed as she entered. Â âYouâre staying home today?â he asked.
Eden nodded. Â âEzraâs handling things,â she said as she sat beside him on the bed, cradling the mug between her hands. Â âNow drink this.â
Fenris peered suspiciously at the mug. Â âWhat is it?â
âMedicine,â she said. Â âIt might not taste good, but itâll help.â
Fenris took the cup from her and sipped cautiously at the beverage. Â As soon as it passed his lips, he shoved the mug back into Edenâs hands.
âHawke,â he said, âthat is disgusting.â
âYou donât have to drink it all at once,â Eden said. Â âJust take it a little at a time and it wonât be so bad.â
âDid your brother tell you what he put in it?â Fenris asked.
Eden shook her head. Â
âTaste it,â Fenris said. Â âIâm not going to drink any more until you know what you just made me put in my mouth.â
Eden took a sip, expecting a bit of unpleasantness, but she was not prepared for the acidic sourness that assaulted her mouth. Â âOh sweet Maker,â she sighed once sheâd recovered from the taste. Â âHe mustâve used apple cider vinegar as the base. Â It is good for you, but it tastes awful.â
âPerhaps because itâs so disgusting that it makes everything less disgusting by comparison.â
Eden smiled. Â âYouâre supposed to dilute it a lot,â she said. Â âThe taste doesnât bother Ezra, so he mustâve gotten the amounts wrong.â
âHow does it not bother him?â
âSensory issues,â Eden said. Â âBelieve me, youâre not the one whoâs been unpleasantly surprised like this. Â Just think of it as initiation into the family.â
âIâd prefer something less painful,â Fenris replied.
âI donât blame you,â she said, leaning forward to kiss Fenris on the forehead. Â âIâll try adding this to some tea. Â Hopefully then it wonât taste quite so bad.â
Fenris chuckled darkly. Â âIf it does, Iâll just stay sick.â

Half an hour later, Fenris had finished the drink and was swaddled under no fewer than six blankets. Â Heâd initially protested, but Eden had felt how cold his extremities were and immediately dragged three more blankets out of the linen closet. Â He was sending halfhearted glares in her direction every so often, but Eden hadnât heard him complain about being cold.
âDo you need anything else?â she asked.
âYes. Â For you to stop asking me that.â
âAnything besides that,â she said. Â âAnd donât tell me to go away either. Â Youâre stuck with me for the day.â
A smile flicked across Fenrisâs face. Â âShame.â
âI know,â Eden replied, sighing in mock exasperation. Â âHow terrible.â
Fenris chuckled. Â âI can think of worse punishments.â
Eden arched an eyebrow. Â âLike what?â
Before Fenris could answer, Ezra strode through the door, clad in the blue shirt that Eden had suggested.
âLike him,â Fenris said.
âWhat?â Ezra asked as he spread his arms in surrender. Â âWhat did I do?â
âApple cider vinegar,â Fenris spat.
Ezraâs brow furrowed for a moment before his face lit up with realization. Â âAh fuck, I didnât tell Eden to dilute it enough.â
âYes, we figured that out,â Eden said drily. Â âI fixed it, thoughâor at least I managed to give Fenris something drinkable.â
âGood,â Ezra said. Â âTry giving him two more dosesâthat should do the trick.â
Eden nodded. Â âAnything else that could help?â
âAh, I nearly forgot,â Ezra said, turning his attention to Fenris as he placed a small tin on the nightstand. Â âI have some salve for you tooânot for your cold, but for your pain. Â Iâve been working on it for a while now, but I think Iâve finally got it right. Â Let me know if it works and if it doesnât, Iâll try tweaking it.â
Fenris picked up the tin, rolling it between his hands before tossing it back onto the nightstand with a sigh. Â âNow youâre both fussing over me,â he muttered.
Ezra chuckled. Â âYou signed up for it when you moved in with us,â he said. Â âWeâre good at taking care of people, even when those people act like they donât need help.â
âI donât,â insisted Fenris.
âI know,â Ezra replied. Â âBut itâs easier to have someone help you than to struggle along by yourself.â
Fenrisâs mouth quirked up into a brief smile. Â âThank you, Hawke,â he said. Â âYou didnât need to go to all this trouble.â
Ezra waved away the comment. Â âIt was nothingâjust something Iâve been working on here or there.â
âEzra,â Eden chided, âyouâve been working on that salve for months.â
âOnly because I had to wait until I was sore to test it.â
âDonât believe him,â she murmured to Fenris. Â âI know exactly how much time he spent on this.â
âWell, thank you for tarnishing that image of me as a medical genius,â Ezra teased. Â âIâd better be going now before you make me look any worse.â
âBe safe,â she said as she pulled him into an embrace.
âOf course,â he replied, giving Eden a final squeeze before he headed for the door. Â âSee you later, E.â
Eden waved to him one last time before shutting the door and sitting down on the bed beside Fenris. Â âSo, should we try out the salve?â
âIâm honestly not sure,â Fenris said as he eyed the tin. Â âAt least I donât have to worry about the taste, but after that...I donât exactly have full confidence in your brotherâs medical skills.â
âYou know,â Eden said, âI donât blame you.â
