‘Black Boys Don’t Cry’

As a journalist, it is important to me to remain passionate about the voiceless people in society. Where so many producers fall into consumerism, recycling the people who are in the limelight and falling into basic mindsets, it is important for me to delve into the deepest parts of people in order to aquire the most unique minds in the U.K. 

I love the arts and frequently watch documentaries on i-D Youtube channel. I am greatly inspired by their videos, however I also have a burning passion for news and current affairs.

To merge the two, I produced for Channel 4 News a story of a young man by the name of Iggy Ldn who had made an incredibly piercing visual spoken word piece that had fast spread around urban communities in London and film festivals around Europe. The piece called ‘Black Boys Don’t Cry’ centered on the masculinity within Black male communities; how Black men are not able to cry or express their emotions, and touched on themes of colourism, something many people in my office were unaware was a prominent issue in the Black community. Iggy Ldn spoke on the assumption within the community that the darker you are, the stronger you are.

I directed, interviewed and edited from start to finish this piece which meshes contemporary visuals with news format. I believe I am and will be a pioneer in creating alternative and smashing content if brands give me the chance to. Either way, I will continue to make waves independently within my immediate cultural community! #ARTFIRST #CREATIVESFIRST
