How did you get into making comics?
I've always enjoyed making my OCs through a lense of "if this were a story I were publishing this is how I'd write it", I have a lot more fun when I have that sort of direction to work with as opposed to having OCs that purely live in my brain and exist just for me to play with by myself
for a long time I had resigned myself to never actually making anything real with them as I don't enjoy writing prose and just had no idea what else I could realistically do, but in 2021 I started following two cat comics two of my twitter mutuals had just started posting: meandering & the exiled!
these comics made me realize that webcomics are just A Thing Anyone Can Do, but in my mind "Anyone" was more like "Anyone* (*only people who already draw A LOT and know they can keep up with regularly making pages)", so I still didn't try making a comic because I drew pretty infrequently and rarely made finished works, I assumed that any comic I tried making would get maybe 5 pages done a year at the pace I drew at
in 2024 I started reading what lurks beneath, which I enjoyed so much that it caused me to pick up and read a ton of other cat comics too (and sometimes different xenofic but I've always been a very cat focused guy...)
following all these different comic authors meant I got to see a lot of different takes on the question "do you have any advice for starting a comic", and the advice I kept seeing often was "just start drawing it, stop waiting for the perfect moment to start it, you'll figure out things as you go"
so I did exactly that and just kind of. started drawing pages for IFTC. like one day I just snapped and became "A guy that makes a comic", and it was honestly extremely weird because I always thought that was supposed to be a more long drawn out planned process but no it just happened one day
I then almost immediately discovered that I actually enjoy drawing way more when it feels like my art has the "purpose" of making the story real in a very concrete way, so all my worries about not having the motivation to draw often enough to make a comic evaporated in the span of about 2 days and I drew the entirety of chapter 1 in about 3 weeks lol
oh god i can feel the quotes i put in the teaser slipping away out of existence as i flesh out the upcoming chapters
to celebrate page 100 I counted every instance of blaze/smolderpaw in the comic (including covers and the mini comic, and counting panels that only show part of her)
our totals are:
chapter 1: 89 smolderpaws (including the comic cover) chapter 2: 74 smolderpaws chapter 3: 124 smolderpaws chapter 4: 80 smolderpaws (including unposted pages) gift minicomic: 19 smolderpaws
this brings us to a grand total of 367 smolderpaws that I've drawn for the comic! happy birthday to all three hundred sixty seven of her
can I confess something... the flower on whitesun's healer collar is supposed to be a sunflower, but I'm pretty sure sunflowers are actually huge and wouldn't be that small. and I refuse to claim that it's actually supposed to be some other flower because it's not. so we're all just going to have to live with his sunflower being very small

writing the comic as you go is all fun and games until you start contemplating turning a 5 page scene into an entire chapter right before you're supposed to start sketching it
I have thoughts about smolderpaw's mystery cold illness but I can't share them because it's a part of the story that's a little ambiguous on purpose (so that people will form their own thoughts and interpretations on it) and I don't want to influence that/make it sound like I'm determining something as canon.... my agony
