you're being way too generous to David Cage by saying he was probably not trying to be intentionally racist considering his past history with POC in his games, including "black protagonist who had hip-hop constantly playing as his BGM, was good at basketball" or "old cryptic Asian librarian who talked with ls and rs switched and had a fu manchu" or "black street thug villain who talked like an a wyatt man comic"
nah some writers just do be like that, where they just rip and re-use tropes without thinking like, at all about how they work and what they represent or how they click with the story and cage is definitely one of those writers. i mean that doesn’t make it any less wrong but i’m fairly sure its racism through idiocy than active hatred
like, a more benign example that i often think of in such situation is battlefield earth - its a film thats bad for a lot of reasons, one of the being that the film is inexplicably shot at a dutch angle at basically all times. a dutch angle is a particular type of framing in film, in which the camera is set at a strange, disorienting angle. its main usage is to represent turmoil for the characters in moments of confusion and fear. the framing says “something is wrong/not quite right” - but battlefield earth just throws it in wherever, because the director thought it looked cool. in roger ebert’s review, he says the following: “Roger Christian has learned from better films that directors sometimes tilt their cameras, but he has not learned why.”
cage gets basically all his tricks from hollywood, and a glance at any of his work makes it very clear a lot of the stuff he uses is used because he thinks its what makes fiction good without thinking like, at all about what the stuff he uses means. focusing on Real Issues makes for Good Cinema, so he will use civil rights imagery to make it a Serious Story About Emotions and it will be Good because he did that. cage understands that sometimes movies use themes like civil rights, but he hasn’t bothered to learn why
dude’s just a hack writer. there’s really nothing else to it. like, again, it doesn’t make any of it better, i just don’t think he’s clever enough to even be intentionally racist
