from /r/vexillology Top comment: Long after the United States of America had ceased to be a polity, successor states of various types and stripes are still extant in the Solar System, the colonies detached and maturing after nearly a millennia since their foundation. The main three are Elysium on Mars, the Pelagic Federation on Earth, and the United Colonies of Venus on the eponymous planet. The Pelagic Federation, on Earth, actually controls the territory of the contiguous United States, though as much under the 45th longitude is desert it is sparsely populated and under territorial administration- the territories of California, Texas, Basin, and Piedmont, used mostly for resource extraction. The main holdings of the federation are outside of this former zone and formed into eight states: Alaska, Arctica, Australia, Bay, Cascadia, Lakes, Isles, and New Zealand. The governmental structure of Pelagia is a Rose/hawkish Federal congressional Republic, however they dabble little in foreign affairs. Their flag does abide to the Red-white-blue standard, though noticeably lighter. Eight stars on a disc defacing a tricolor triband of red, white, and blue, with the bands topped off with waves.
