I was pretty sure this fawn doe was pregnant, she had been living with a buck before I got her & is the mother of the two does from the original trio of fawns I had intended to collect (I ended up taking 5 home, the breeder no longer wanted their mother & I was just lucky a satin cropped up in another of his litters around the same time). But now I think she’s definitely just being a typical fawn, regardless of care red gene mice are just genetically predisposed towards becoming obese. Still, it’s one of the least sinister gene related issues in mice, tumours reliably crop up in many other lines.
Their typical gestation period is 21 days, but can be delayed by up to 28 if the doe has had another litter recently, so if she doesn’t have them by tomorrow we’ll know for sure. Usually mice look ready to pop the day before giving birth, but another trait of red gene mice is smaller litter sizes so it’s possible she just has a few babies in there.
