The revelation that a documentary filmmaker used voice-cloning software to make the late chef Anthony Bourdain say words he never spoke has drawn criticism amid ethical concerns about use of the powerful technology.
The movie “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain” appeared in cinemas Friday and mostly features real footage of the beloved celebrity chef and globe-trotting television host before he died in 2018. But its director, Morgan Neville, told The New Yorker that a snippet of dialogue was created using artificial intelligence technology.
That's renewed a debate about the future of voice-cloning technology, not just in the entertainment world but in politics and a fast-growing commercial sector dedicated to transforming text into realistic-sounding human speech.

What’s on the GMO menu: fast-growing salmon and slow-swimming tuna
What’s happening: A genetically modified salmon will become the first GM food animal to go on sale in the US, according to its maker, AquaBounty, possibly launching an era of steaks and chops from creatures with modified DNA.
A landmark: In the US, a number of genetically modified animals have been approved or cleared for sale. But so far, only one genetically engineered animal has been approved in the US as food. That animal, an Atlantic salmon engineered to grow faster on fish farms, took 20 years to win a nod from regulators, and then got held up for four more years over a labeling dispute. AquaBounty says it is imminently ready to sell salmon to distributors in the US. Its launch could be a hugely significant signal to others working on genetically engineered animals.

The adaptability and resilience of informal housing around the world could provide a useful model for fast-growing cities – if we can solve some of its problems, too.
This involves learning to see past the spatial irregularity, the surface grime and the patchy aesthetic to understand the economic resilience, the social cohesion, the autonomy, the technological ingenuity, the remarkable skills of everyday living that can flourish in informal quarters of cities of the global South.
A new design project called “the expandable house” (rumah tambah in Bahasa Indonesian, or rubah for short) tries to do just that – learn from the kampung. It identifies and builds upon the successes of the kampung and other forms of informal housing, and tries to improve upon their weaknesses.
In so doing, it addresses the minimum criteria that the UN Habitat defines for adequate housing, such as security of tenure, availability of services and infrastructure, affordability, habitability (ensuring physical safety), access to jobs and facilities, and is capable of expressing cultural identity. Kampungs often exhibit precisely these features already in their strong culture of self-reliance, economic resilience and a robust sense of community.
The expandable house project is part of ongoing research by the Urban-Rural Systems (URS) team at the Future Cities Laboratory (FCL) (a research unit of the ETH Zürich in Singapore). It learns from the kampung by allowing the house to be flexibly configured around fluctuating patterns of resource consumption and expenditure of its residents. Practically, this means understanding the patterns of household income generation and expenditure, water, energy and food consumption, as well as waste production.
The expandable house is designed around the following six principles:
