Ye, and it comes with the dynamic too. I friended two teachers last year on fb, and one I spent alot of time joking around with after classes and in his office. Although he still graded my papers and judged me for my writing and such, we had an almost more “friendly” dynamic. This other prof I spent more time with because of 1) meetings in a group he and I were a part of 2) I took more of his classes 3) he required more outside of class contact time and 3) he and I just naturally ended up having more serious conversations after class or during office hours. 

I had no problem emailing the first earlier in the week and being like “yooo can i visit to say hi later in the week”. The second I still have yet to contact. I’m debating just emailing him because that’s what I’m used to, but I feel like he would be like “why didn’t you just message me on facebook, man?” 

The slapping is still not okay though.

The thing is that yes John is physically abusive but Sherlock is emotionally abusive and manipulative. That's why their being in a relationship kind of sickens me. Like friends can have the distance to constantly reappraise and decide "Is this worth it" and male friendships are fairly vitriolic anyway but as a couple? That's sick and wrong.

I hope a lot of S4 fanfic writes that scene out of our collective memory. Not that it couldn’t be done well, I guess, but I think it would take a pretty phenomenal writer to handle it well. And there’s a longstanding tradition of fic writers ignoring canon that’s not particularly helpful. (C.f. EWE-fic [“Epilogue? What Epilogue?”] in the HP fandom.) If you’re going to make these into a functional, attractive couple and incorporate that scene into their history without blaming DV victims? You’re definitely facing an uphill slog.

If I were to tell that story, I’d frame it slightly differently. I have a cousin, a veteran with PTSD, and I’ve seen his wife provoke similar “moments” as a kind of catharsis and forcing him to confront his emotions. Was it perfectly healthy? Maybe not, but the situation was so messed up to begin with, there weren’t a lot of perfect or even good options, and it let her have a relationship with someone she loved and who I think truly loves her. I wonder if something like that could work, even halfway.

Thank you - it does feel a bit like talking to tumble weeds sometimes, especially having been on here for almost eight years...you see people come and go, you make friends and then you drift apart when they leave or fandoms change...my follower count is probably actually half of what it says it is, because so many of those blogs are dormant, abandoned and left to be archived...

1. Correct!! Fun fact - my username is the combination of love phrases from Castle and Farscape - “always” appears in Castle multiple times, and “beyond hope” is from Farsscape season 3’s episode A Dog With Two Bones (Aeryn: Do you love Aeryn Sun? John: Beyond hope.).

2. Kinda/Nope. Hannibal’s created by the same guy that did Dead Like Me, right? I really like Dead Like Me, but in a “It’s a good show I’m glad I watched it” kind of way, not a “I will rewatch every episode ten thousand times” kind of way. And that feeling definitely matters for me when choosing a show. Also - there didn’t seem to be enough prominent female characters for my liking. But totally correct on the gore thing - I’m not much of a gore fan.

3. Correct!! I LOVED Doctor Who when the reboot happened starting with Nine, but I stopped watching shortly after Clara was introduced with Eleven, and didn’t watch Twelve at all (though I’ve been told it’s good and everyone loves Bill). Jodie Whittaker is KILLING IT as Thirteen and never want her to leave.
