Instead of Atlantic salmon and trout, the aquaculture sector should focus on cultivating species with less complex needs
Those who care about the welfare of fish and seafood should opt for clams, mussels or seaweed, according to a new report, which says popular fish, including farmed Atlantic salmon and trout, have more complex welfare needs and are more likely to experience pain and suffering.
There is no scientific evidence of the behavioural and environmental needs of nearly 80% of aquatic species, an analysis of more than 400 species farmed around the world found.
The âenormousâ lack of information is âgoing to translate into extreme suffering for individual animalsâ, said report co-author Becca Franks, a research scientist at New York University.
The report, published in the journal Science Advances, found that a failure to provide the right environment and to handle aquatic animals correctly can lead to birth defects, restricted mobility, aggressive behaviour and extreme pain during slaughter.
It recommends that the aquaculture industry focuses on the cultivation of simpler species with fewer welfare and environmental risks â seaweeds and bivalves such as oysters, mussels and clams.
I recommend seaweed. It's a nutritious food source and its cultivation is of benefit to ocean ecosystems, especially now with the impact of climate change.
Marine ecosystems are full of omega-3: little fish eat marine plankton, and get eaten by bigger fish, and the whole food chain passes on omega-3 to humans. But the system is different for farmed fish, which is what most of us eat. âIn a fish farm, itâs just thousands of fish in a cage. They eat what theyâre given by the fish farmer,â Prof. Napier says. In farms, fish are often fed fish meal made from Peruvian anchovies. But these anchovies are already being fished at the maximum level at which the industry can be sustained, Napier says â even as global aquaculture is expected to keep growing. According to the UNâs Food and Agricultural Organization, growing demand for fish oil supplements means that the fish oil contained in the fish meal fed to farmed fish is diminishing. That means the amount of omega-3 in the fish we consume is declining, too. âThere are finite levels of omega fish oils that come out of the ocean each year â thatâs all weâve got,â he says. âIf aquaculture is expanding but the most important input you need to put into peopleâs diets, the fish oil, is completely static, youâre diluting how much is fed to the fish.â

Aquaculture is booming. Today, worldwide, we consume more farmed fish than wild-caught species. Think about it: How often do shoppers buy the more expensive wild-caught salmon over the farm-raised, and how often do they even get that choice?
This global trend is taking a toll on the wild fish populations that are harvested to feed farmed fish. A new study in Nature Sustainability shows that, by 2037, aquaculture demands could outstrip supply of so-called forage fish, or fish like anchovies and menhaden, which are often deemed too small for humans to eat. Although theyâre rarely considered by most consumers, these species do feed the fish we eat (and livestockâpigs and poultry are large consumers of fish-based feeds), making them a vital link in marine ecosystems.
Despite the studyâs dire conclusion, there is hope, say the authors. Feed reforms could allow for aquacultureâs continued growth as a source of critical protein on a hungry planet, while sustaining the forage species.
âAquaculture is now the primary user of forage fish,â says lead author Halley Froehlich, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Santa Barbara. âBut we wanted to step back and look at other sectors in the food industry, like pigs and poultry, to get some perspective on how these fish are being used, and what are the actual tangible mitigating measures that could avoid surpassing supply.â

Your English is very good, I wouldnât know you werenât a native speaker if you didnât say so. In terms of farmed fish, in these settings fish are crowded in environments, with waste products, including faeces and dead fish flushed into the surrounding waters where they contaminate local ecosystems. These captive fish must also be fed, requiring 37 pounds of âfeederâ fish to produce just 1 pound of commercially sold fish, who are usually caught in nets or farmed themselves, producing even more waste and even greater damage to local ecosystems. There is just no way to farm fish on a commercial scale and not have it be bad for the environment.
