Day 27: Is there a budding romance in your WIP? I haven’t talked about these secondary characters nearly enough. Zakiyah, or Zak, is a brilliant young Researcher with a strong mind and a lot of ambition. Kaiden is a Soldier with a bright smile and a good heart. Both of them immediately make the decision to befriend Luken and the three of them have become family. In a lot of ways Luken’s like the unwieldy child that these two ended up with and it’s drawn them together. Day 28: Any other projects or WIPs going on? There’s always more projects but my main side project is White Rose Red, which will most likely be a novella. I still have a lot to work out for it. It’s told from inside the broken mind of Kassian Mallory and takes place either in the Victorian Era or in a place heavily inspired by it. Kassian has been a very fun character to write because he’s insane, and an insane character takes an entirely different writing approach. Day 21: What’s the scariest thing in your WIP? That depends on what you consider scary. The consistent war that never ends and which everyone must be a part of? The inhuman creatures that are almost impossible to defeat? Torture, murder, and death regardless of age? Pick your poison. Day 11 & 12: Main character’s favorite season & How seasons work in your WIP Luken’s favorite season is summer. He likes the sun and the heat. It’s significantly more enjoyable to be outside when it’s warm. I haven’t fully figured out the seasons but from what I’ve seen there’s winter and there’s summer. I actually think that the seasons may not be cyclical but fixed. The humans seem to always have summer while the Sylveshi seem to be constantly in winter. It may be like that for a number of years and then switch but I’m not sure. Day 10: A secret that your MC wants to keep quiet. Erion, like all Sylveshi, has the ability to fly yet it is a skill he rarely uses. He fears heights and falling but tries to hide that from others. The scene mentioned above recounts Erion’s death, which was at a very young age. Day 3: First line of your favorite chapter. The War has changing perspectives and, at the moment, chapter repetition from different perspectives to show the other pieces of the story. This particular chapter is a retelling from Erion’s point of view. I prefer this version because of the added poignancy. For the first time, he meets humans with kindness who may be willing to help him. He knows he shouldn’t trust them just as they know they shouldn’t trust him. Day 2: What event gets your story going? The War, the book itself, starts when our dual protagonists enter the fight. Every human aged 16 is drafted for testing and those who make it through (most of them) enter the war. Luken Harlow is no exception. The Sylveshi side has no need of such a draft but, even so, Erion has reached the age in which he, too, most take on the role of soldier.
