Have you seen Dexter? I'm thinking I might watch it but idk
I saw the original and it was pretty bad. Like only Seasons 1 and 7 were halfway good. I have no idea whether the reboot is any good but it looks kinda stupid too. "YOU" was clearly inspired by Dexter, but I ended up liking it a lot better.
How so?
YOU is funnier, the plot moves at a brisker pace and the twists are more shocking, Joe is a worse person than Dexter but the show doesn't try to get you to like him like Dexter does, the female side characters are better written, and in general I think YOU has a lot clearer ideas about what social commentary it wants to make. To name a few. But the clearest comparison I could point to, is that the character of Mr. Mooney in YOU was clearly inspired by Harry Morgan from Dexter, and yet YOU frames Mooney as abusive in ways that went completely unexamined with how Dexter kept treating Harry as some sort of hero.
Ah. Oki :)
Like Dexter was famous for pioneering the "hearing the internal monologue of a serial killer" trope. But by season 3 it had gotten old and the show never seemed to realize how tedious it was getting. With YOU, Joe is an obnoxious character, but there are more than a few clever things the show manages to do with how badly the audience wants him to SHUT THE FUCK UP after a while. There are moments characters yell at him for staring off into space, there are times he'll be cut-off mid soliloquy because he's an idiot who read the situation wrong. And most importantly Joe lies to himself a lot more than Dexter does, so just because we can hear his thoughts doesn't mean we actually know what he's going to do.
Plus with Dexter, the internal monologue thing seemed more like an incidental stylistic choice. Whereas YOU uses the monologue to further characterize Joe as a narcissist, and by the end of the show I actually felt sorry for him just because nobody should have to suffer living in Joe's head, not even Joe.
Oh that actually sounds pretty interesting
Joe Goldberg is more punchable than Walter White, if you can even imagine such a beast. But without spoiling it, I think he does get punished better than Walt in the end.
Sounds pretty interesting, I think I might watch that
I'd say in terms of objective quality, Westworld is the best-written show. At least the first season is. "YOU" kinda turned into a soap opera the longer it went on, but it was able to do some interesting things with its balls-to-the-wall insanity. BCS is competent but I think straddles the two in terms of quality in a way where we don't quite get the best of either world. Both Dolores Abernathy and Love Quinn "go there" in ways I think the writers were scared to let Kim Wexler.
Those r all interesting recs , I'll check them out :)
