Trial of the Failing Grade: Act 1
[The students enter the trial room.]
[MONODOODLE]: Greetings, students.
[XAVIER]: … Mother fucker…
[DAISY]: Mother fucker is right. I really hoped we wouldn’t have to do another of these.
[EVAN]: I really hoped it wouldn’t be him.
[ELLIE]: You’ve got that right. I miss Ryan already…
[MONODOODLE]: The remaining eight of you have been tasked with solving the murder of Ryan Marin, the Ultimate teacher.
[KENNY]: He’s… not even actually a teacher.
[XAVIER]: Go fuck yourself, Ken.
[KENNY]: Wow. Rude.
[MONODOODLE]: When you believe you have chosen correctly, you will be subject to a vote.
[MAIA]: Yeah, yeah, get on with it…
[MONODOODLE]: If you vote correctly, the killer will be punished by death. If not, the killer will be allowed to go free, and all the others will be punished by death.
[KENNY]: I… don’t think we still need the entire explanation.
[DAISY]: Are you done?
[...]
[MONODOODLE]: Yes.
[...]
[DAISY]: Okay then.
[JAIME]: I can’t believe there’s only eight of us left…
[EVAN]: I can’t believe Fox made me drag this thing down to the trial grounds.
[EVAN huffs and sets the mannequin into a standing position. FOX looks extremely proud of herself.]
[...]
[DAISY]: The gigantic fuck-you mannequin?
[FOX]: Mhm!
[...]
[DAISY]: Care to explain… why you did this?
[FOX]: It’s a surprise tool that’ll help us later.
[MAIA]: With what?
[...]
[FOX]: Well… obviously to solve the murder, Maia.
[...]
[MAIA]: What?
[FOX]: I think that if we reenact what must’ve happened from back to front then we’d be able to work things out.
[XAVIER starts crying. DAISY puts a hand on his shoulder and gives FOX a sharp glare.]
[FOX]: … Oh. Sorry.
[KENNY]: It’s not a bad idea. Do we have to use the gigantic fuck-you mannequin, though?
[FOX]: The alternative is dragging the actual corpse down.
[...]
[KENNY]: Y’know what, this is good. I’ve decided that this is good.
[EVAN]: Where do we start, though?
[KENNY]: Anyone got a pen?
[JAIME tosses KENNY a pen from his pocket.]
[KENNY]: Thanks, Jai. Anyway--let’s start with how the actual corpse looked. First of all, he was--
[KENNY knocks over the mannequin. EVAN groans.]
[KENNY]: Sorry, Evan. He was face-down in the water, no shoes or socks. His jacket was… somewhere else.
[XAVIER]: His jacket was folded up beside his sleeping bag.
[...]
[FOX]: That’s weird.
[MAIA]: It sure is. Any idea why?
[KENNY]: I couldn’t tell you.
[MAIA]: Not you.
[KENNY]: Fuck you.
[MAIA]: Fuck you too!
[XAVIER]: [shakily] Grow up, both of you.
[...]
[The class glances around at each other, unsure if what they just heard actually happened or they all just hallucinated it.]
[XAVIER]: Ryan is dead. My best friend is dead and one of you bastards did it! Stop fighting over this meaningless bullshit--if we run out of time, we die and the person who killed Ryan gets off scot-free! I can’t believe that I still have to say this! We’ve done this three times already and it’s like you all learned nothing!
[Heavy silence falls over them, broken by only XAVIER’s shaky sobs.]
[XAVIER]: Y--y’know, Kenny, Maia, I really thought better of you two.
[...]
[EVAN]: … Okay. This is weird.
[EVAN turns to MAIA and KENNY and gestures at XAVIER]
[EVAN]: This is weird for you guys, too? Xavier being right about something?
[MAIA]: Y--yeah. I didn’t expect to ever say this, but… sorry, Xavier. You’re right. I should be acting more mature.
[...]
[MAIA]: Anyway, this is fucked. I’m apologizing to Xavier because I was being immature. Kenny, can you get on with it?
[KENNY]: Sure.
[KENNY flips the mannequin over.]
[KENNY]: When Maia turned Ryan over, a bunch of water spilled out of his mouth. Is that right?
[MAIA]: Um… yeah. It’s right.
[KENNY]: Right. This makes me figure that we know what Ryan’s cause of death was--Maia?
[MAIA]: U--uh. Drowning.
[KENNY gestures at her with the pen.]
[KENNY]: Righty-o.
[EVAN]: You’re so… whimsical about this.
[DAISY]: Get used to it. He’s Kenny.
[KENNY turns back to the corpse.]
[KENNY]: However. That begs the question--why didn’t he just… flip himself over?
[ELLIE]: That’s exactly what I was gonna ask!
[KENNY]: Well… that, for now, that’s what’s stumping me.
[ELLIE]: What? You don’t know?
[MAIA]: Don’t forget the bruises.
[ELLIE]: The wha?
[KENNY]: The bruises--I was just getting to that. When Evan and Jaime turned him over, I realized that Ryan had a bruise on his forehead.
[KENNY draws a scribble on the mannequin’s forehead.]
[KENNY]: I asked Maia to roll up his pant legs--and, guess what, there were more bruises on his calves and knees too. I also found even more bruises on his chest when I unbuttoned his shirt.
[KENNY draws more scribbles on the mannequin’s chest and legs.]
[KENNY]: I assume the bruises were on his upper legs, too, but we can’t say for sure. We were on a bit of a time crunch.
[MAIA]: Hang on--what about the ankle thing? And the neck thing? And--
[KENNY]: I’m getting there, jeez! When Maia rolled up his pants, we also noticed that Ryan had a cut on his ankle. The weird thing, though, is that it was perfectly straight and perfectly even on his ankle. Not like a cut with a knife, like he’d walked into something sharp.
[MAIA]: It was like…
[As MAIA speaks, KENNY draws a straight line across the mannequin’s left ankle.]
[MAIA]: … a puncture wound, I guess?
[FOX]: A… puncture wound, you say…? What do you think caused it?
[MAIA]: Me? I don’t fuckin’ know. It was dark and I was freaking out.
[...]
[DAISY]: … a dart. It was a dart.
[...]
[KENNY looks up from the body.]
[KENNY]: … Why do you think that?
[Wordlessly, DAISY removes the package of darts from her purse. FOX gasps.]
[FOX]: Those are from the gym!
[DAISY]: There’s one missing.
[FOX grabs EVAN’s arm. He looks deeply uncomfortable.]
[FOX]: Evan--! Evan, Evan, Evan! So much for irrelevance! They’re from the gym!
[EVAN]: Do we know…?
[FOX]: We do! Because where else would we get darts?
[...]
[EVAN]: … Fair…
[KENNY]: Okay… Maia, where’d you see it?
[MAIA]: Left side. Er--his left.
[KENNY etches an X on the side of the mannequin’s neck MAIA indicated.]
[KENNY]: Alright. Any questions?
[...]
[KENNY]: No, okay.
[He eyes MAIA]
[KENNY]: I believe you had a question, though.
[MAIA]: What? No I didn’t.
[KENNY]: Asked Daisy a question.
[...]
[KENNY]: Well, Maia, Daisy, just to refresh your memory, Ryan wasn’t wearing his jacket. He wasn’t wearing his socks, and he wasn’t wearing his shoes. It’s like he knew he was walking into his death. Daisy, you found the jacket. Do you have any clue why that could be?
[DAISY]: U-uh… uhm…
[...]
[DAISY]: I…
[...]
[DAISY]: O--oh god… oh my god…
[DAISY starts sobbing.]
[XAVIER]: Wh--? Daisy…
[DAISY]: I… you should all vote me. All of you.
[XAVIER]: What?!
[DAISY]: It was my fault. It’s still my fault, all of it… it’s all my fault.
[XAVIER]: Daisy, what? Why? What are you talking about?
[MAIA]: … Well… that was fast…
[DAISY]: Ryan is dead because of me.
Oh yeah here's the finished teruko

Danganronpa Anachronism: Day 14
--
- [Opening Up] -
- [KATHLEEN’s room, 8:23] -
--
[TW: Discussion of addiction]
[MARGARET opens the door to KATHLEEN’s room.]
[MARGARET]: Hey, Kat.
[KATHLEEN rolls over and covers her head with the pillow.]
[KATHLEEN]: Too early.
[MARGARET]: Oh, I understand. But there’s a new floor, and Nadia wants us to investigate it.
[KATHLEEN]: Nooooo.
[MARGARET crosses her arms and sighs.]
[MARGARET]: Can we at least talk?
[KATHLEEN winces]
[KATHLEEN]: Oh, joy.
[MARGARET]: Now, I’m not mad at you. I just wish you’d told me, really. I could’ve helped.
[KATHLEEN]: And that’s exactly why I didn’t want to tell you. You’re not a friend, Maggie. You act like you’re some genius all the time.
[MARGARET]: I don’t do that.
[KATHLEEN]: Yes, you do! You’re always… doctor-ing. All the time. You don’t relax, you don’t take breaks. You’re everything for everyone all the time.
[MARGARET]: Don’t be worried for me, Kat. You’re the one who needs help.
[KATHLEEN]: I don’t need help. I’m perfectly fine. I’m not on drugs right now. Daisy still has them.
[MARGARET]: I can help you get clean, for good. I promise I won’t tell your family, if that’s what you’re worried about. There are programs you can sign up for. A lot of them, really. You can choose whichever you think will work best for you. And no matter how long it takes, no matter if you even get there or not--which won’t happen, because I know you can do it--I’ll be on your side.
[KATHLEEN]: But… I don’t want to lose my friends.
[...]
[MARGARET]: Is that it?
[KATHLEEN]: Yeah.
[MARGARET]: If your friends leave you because you’re going through a hard time, they weren’t really your friends to begin with.
[KATHLEEN]: It’s not like that. It’s…
[...]
[KATHLEEN]: … Maggie.
[MARGARET]: I’ll never leave you, Kat. I know how it feels to be struggling.
[KATHLEEN]: Do you?
--
- [Confrontation] -
- [RYAN’s room, 11:09] -
--
[MARGARET knocks on RYAN’s door. He opens it.]
[MARGARET]: I’ve got a bone to pick with you, young man.
[RYAN]: I’m… only younger than you by two months?
[MARGARET]: I--it’s the principle of the thing! Just sit down.
[RYAN]: … is this about Kat?
[MARGARET]: Of course it is!
[RYAN]: [sighs] Look, Maggie, I never meant for it to turn into this whole thing. I wanted to tell you, just not in front of everyone.
[MARGARET]: Then why didn’t you tell me?
[RYAN]: Nadia told me not to.
[MARGARET]: If Nadia were to jump off a cliff, would you? Get a spine.
[RYAN]: She said it’d upset you. [whispers] Looks like she was right.
[MARGARET]: What was that?!
[RYAN]: I said, it seemed like she was right that it’d upset you. You have to understand, Maggie. We didn’t want to drive a wedge between the two of you. And then when they got stolen, and we couldn’t figure out who did it…
[MARGARET]: I’m way more mad at you than I am at Kat or Daisy! You don’t understand, Ryan, you really don’t. The reason the drugs could’ve gotten stolen is because you were so secretive about them! And, yes, Daisy shouldn’t have taken them, but you’re the people who let it happen!
[RYAN]: Go yell at Nadia if you have a problem. I’m just the messenger.
[MARGARET]: That’s ridiculous!
[RYAN]: It’s true.
[MARGARET]: It’s bullshit!
[...]
[MARGARET]: Ahem.

- [Exploring the Third Floor] -
- [Third floor hallway, 12:06] -
--
[NADIA]: Alright. Everyone’s here?
[Affirmative murmurs.]
[NADIA]: Right, right.
[KENNY]: We need a plan this time. Something solid. Jaime, go with Fox.
[JAIME]: Wh--what…?
[KENNY]: Just do it. Okay?
[...]
[JAIME]: … Okay.
[FOX]: [claps] Yay!
[MAIA]: [sighs] Only if Ellie goes with you.
[KENNY]: I--[sighs] Alright. Fine.
[MARGARET glances at JAIME out of the corner of her eye]
[MARGARET]: Alright. Maia? You look like you need the break.
[MAIA]: Ugh, you have no idea. I’m on board.
[NADIA]: I’ll handle Kat, if that’s how we’re doing things.
[RYAN]: And I’ll take Daisy. That just leaves Evan and Xavier.
[...]
[MARGARET]: Um… maybe that’s not a great idea.
[EVAN]: What? No, no, I can handle it.
[XAVIER]: Yeah, sure.
[MARGARET]: You’re sure?
[EVAN]: I’m sure.
--
- [Guidance] -
- [Guidance office, 12:20] -
--
[TW: Mild sexual reference]
[MAIA and MARGARET enter the guidance office.]
[MAIA]: [sigh] Honey, I’m home.
[MARGARET]: Oh? Were you in the guidance office a lot?
[MAIA]: You have no clue. My guidance councillor’s practically my best friend. I stay in her office to catch up on my work.
[MARGARET]: Do you miss a lot of school?
[MAIA]: Yeah. My mom pulls me out of it a lot to take care of my siblings.
[MARGARET]: Oh.
[...]
[MAIA]: Shit, now I’ve gone and made things weird.
[MARGARET]: No, not at all. I’m here for things like that.
[MAIA]: [cackles] You’re like our guidance councillor!
[MARGARET]: I guess I am.
[MAIA]: [claps] Oh my god! You should join the staff!
[MARGARET]: … the what?
[MAIA]: Fox and I made the school staff. I’m the principal and she’s the secretary! We still need a guidance councillor!
[MARGARET]: Ooh, sounds fun.
[MAIA]: Maybe we could bring Ryan on as a teacher.
[...]
[MARGARET]: Um… maybe.
[MAIA]: Oh, yeah. You guys broke up.
[MARGARET]: I--Maia! We didn’t break up! We weren’t together!
[MAIA]: Hah! Tell that to the judge, babes. Nobody reacts like that to being accused of going swimming with someone.
[MARGARET]: Well? It’s what we did. Nadia just said it was off-limits.
[MAIA looks at her and gestures crudely with a marker and a paper towel tube. MARGARET, flustered and scandalized, shakes her head.]
[MARGARET]: Maia! It’s not like that! I--I never--!
[MAIA]: [cackles] Oh my god. You’re adorable.
[MARGARET]: Don’t be like that, Maia! You’re so immature.
[MAIA]: Hey, you said it, not me.
--
- [Library expanded] -
- [Library second floor, 12:30] -
--
[KATHLEEN and NADIA enter the library’s second floor through a double glass door.]
[KATHLEEN]: Man, this place’s nice.
[NADIA]: It is. I wonder how they managed to built it.
[KATHLEEN]: Fuck if I know.
[NADIA]: You’re so crass.
[KATHLEEN glares at NADIA out of the corner of her eye.]
[NADIA]: Please stop looking at me like that.
[KATHLEEN]: We’ve been kidnapped. I feel like you of all people would be angrier. You’re a lawyer.
[NADIA]: I am angry. I’m just not… like you.
[KATHLEEN]: What do you mean, like me?
[NADIA]: [scoffs] Well, if you put it simply… you’re mean.
[KATHLEEN]: I’m sorry, I’m mean? You’re the one who’s been bitching at us every trial.
[NADIA]: I solved the second one. Behave.
[KATHLEEN refuses to speak. Her jaw is tight.]
[NADIA]: Good.

- [Wood Shop] -
- [Wood shop, 12:40] -

[XAVIER]: You’re quiet.
[EVAN]: Not much to say. Is that a crime?
[XAVIER]: You’re never this quiet.
[EVAN]: Xavier.
[XAVIER]: Is this about Charlotte?
[...]
[XAVIER]: It’s about Charlotte, huh.
[EVAN]: Leave me alone.
[XAVIER]: She tried to kill me.
[EVAN]: She… [sighs]
[XAVIER]: She loved you. And you failed her.
[EVAN]: I did not!
[ignoring him, XAVIER opens the door to the wood shop.]
[XAVIER]: Well, shit.
[EVAN]: What?
[XAVIER]: Power tools. Lots of ‘em.
[XAVIER picks up a buzz saw and turns it on.]
[EVAN]: You have no clue how to use that thing. You’re gonna lose a hand.
[XAVIER]: Get fucked.
[EVAN]: No, actually. That’s a stupid idea and I won’t be taking responsibility for it.
[XAVIER]: Ugh. Fine.
[EVAN]: Thank you.
[XAVIER]: ‘s it just me, or is this… kind of dangerous?
[EVAN]: I just told you that.
[XAVIER]: No, like, if these get into the wrong hands, someone’s losing an eyeball. I think Kat wants to drill someone’s eyeball out.
[EVAN]: Don’t give me that visual!
[XAVIER]: Do I look like I give a shit?
[EVAN]: So we agree?
[XAVIER]: What?
[EVAN]: We’re blocking off the wood shop?
[XAVIER]: Wait--fuck. What?
--
- [Musician’s Paradise] -
- [Music room, 12:50] -
--
[RYAN enters the music room. He smiles.]
[RYAN]: Oh, nice.
[DAISY]: A music room?
[RYAN]: Yeah. Do you play instruments, Daisy?
[DAISY]: No. Wish I did. You?
[RYAN]: Guitar. Wonder if i can find one here.
[He opens a few cabinets.]
[RYAN]: Here.
[A strum. An out-of-tune chord. They both grimace.]
[RYAN]: … Needs some tuning.
[DAISY]: Can you do that?
[RYAN]: You bet.
[DAISY]: Nice. I’d love to hear you play sometime. Wonder what else they’ve got in here.
[RYAN]: Uh, looks like… wow. Whole orchestra in here.
[DAISY]: Oh shit, really?
[RYAN]: Yeah. Couple saxophones, couple flutes, clarinets, trumpets… they’ve even got a string section.
[DAISY]: Huh.
[RYAN]: I could teach you.
[DAISY]: I… think I’m fine.
[RYAN]: Oh.

- [Troublemaker] -
- [Chemistry Lab, 13:00] -

[TW: Implication of child abuse]
[ELLIE]: Ooh. What’s all this?
[ELLIE reaches toward a container filled with an unknown substance. KENNY grabs her and pulls her away.]
[KENNY]: Don’t touch that!
[ELLIE]: Ow! Meanie.
[KENNY]: See this label? [He points to a warning label on the side of the bottle.] That means corrosive. If that spills on you, your skin burns off. Do you want that!?
[ELLIE]: You’re grumpy.
[KENNY]: I’m serious. There’s a difference.
[ELLIE]: And mean.
[KENNY]: I have to be.
[ELLIE]: And whiny.
[KENNY]: You’re whiny. I’m not whiny.
[ELLIE]: Is this about your boyfriend?
[KENNY]: Wh--?!
[ELLIE]: Did Jaime reject you or something?
[KENNY]: Ellie, you can’t ask things like that!
[ELLIE]: Oh.
[...]
[ELLIE]: I’m still curious.
[KENNY]: Ellie, just shut up and let me work.
[ELLIE]: You’re not even doing anything!
[KENNY]: I’m checking to see what we have.
[ELLIE]: [stomps foot] You’re mean! I miss Maia! [fake crying]
[KENNY]: [sighs] The fake tantrum might work on her, but I’m not that kind of person, kid.
[ELLIE]: Maia’s nice! She’s better than you!
[KENNY]: Holy shit, kid. Stop screaming. You’re making my head hurt.
[ELLIE slumps down on the floor, still crying.]
[ELLIE]: You’re so mean!
[KENNY]: [Turns around] Oh my god, SHUT UP!
[She goes completely quiet, not looking KENNY in the eyes. Her lips press together. She stands up and brushes her dress off.]
[ELLIE]: … [whispering] sorry.
[...]
[KENNY]: Okay.

- [Bad Memories] -
- [Biology lab, 13:10] -
--
[TW: Mention of animal cruelty, depiction of panic attacks/flashbacks, mention of vomit, mention of decomposing bodies, implication of human experimentation]
[FOX reaches for the door, but goes still and quiet.]
[FOX]: I don’t think we’re meant to go in there.
[JAIME]: … Are you okay, Fox?
[...]
[FOX says nothing, simply backing away from the door.]
[JAIME]: … Um, well, I’m sure it’s fine.
[FOX]: It’s not… it’s really not.
[JAIME]: No, actually, are you okay? You don’t look very well.
[FOX]: … It’s fine. Okay. If you want to open the door so badly, open the door.
[JAIME]: I mean, I’ve been in a ton of bio labs before. It can’t be that bad.
[JAIME opens the door to the bio lab. Immediately, he is hit with the smell of rot and chemicals. He coughs and pulls his shirt up… then looks into the room.]
[JAIME]: [horrified] Holy FUCK!
[The bio lab is… barely even deserving of the title. The walls are lined with cages and tanks--most of the animals in them long-dead. A lab bench with restraints sits in the middle of the room. His stomach churns at the thought of why such a table would need restraints.]
[JAIME]: [on the verge of tears] Oh my god. Oh my fucking god…
[JAIME gags and slams the door shut. THUMP. FOX falls to her knees.]
[JAIME]: Fox?
[FOX does not reply. They simply shake, resting on their knees, eyes vacant.]
[JAIME]: Fox, what--what’s happening? Are you okay? Say something, please, please… Fox, please…
[FOX does not reply. She does not seem to process JAIME closing the door, or his words, or anything at all.]
[JAIME]: Okay, breathe, okay?
[FOX does not reply.]
[JAIME]: I--I’m going to get Maggie! Is it okay if I get Maggie?
[...]
[JAIME]: Fox, did you hear me? I’m going to get Maggie.
[FOX]: [whispering] … don’t leave me.
[JAIME]: I won’t. I’m gonna stay right here.
[FOX]: Don’t leave me, don’t leave… she’s coming to get me…
[JAIME]: What?
[FOX]: She--she wants us dead, we’re all going to die…
[JAIME]: Fox, who’s she?!
[FOX]: I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry…
[JAIME tries to stand, but FOX pulls him back down by his sleeve, eyes more intense than he’s ever seen.]
[JAIME]: Fox, please, I just need to go a few steps--
[FOX]: Don’t leave. Stay right here. You’ll protect me.
[JAIME]: I--I can’t protect anything!
[FOX starts crying]
[JAIME]: Oh--oh God, was that the wrong thing to--Maggie! Maggie, help!
[Footsteps. MARGARET comes running down the hallway.]
[JAIME]: I--I don’t know what happened! I mean, I do--long story, don’t go in that room.
[MARGARET]: With Fox here, or…?
[JAIME]: Ever. Never, never, never. It’s awful, Maggie, you have no idea.
[MARGARET]: Okay, Jaime, maybe you should…
[FOX]: No!
[JAIME]: She won’t let me leave.
[MARGARET]: Okay, Fox, I’m going to take you to your room now--
[FOX]: Don’t take me anywhere!
[Concerned, MARGARET crouches down at FOX’s side.]
[MARGARET]: Hey. I won’t hurt you. I’m here to help.
[FOX]: J--just… just leave me alone. Don’t hurt me any more.
[MARGARET]: [softly] Fox, you’re alright. Nobody’s going to hurt you. Is it okay if I touch you?
[Franticially, FOX shakes her head.]
[FOX]: No… no, don’t touch me, don’t move me, don’t do anything… doctors… scientists, you’re all the same…
[MARGARET furrows her brow]
[MARGARET]: The same as what?
[FOX]: You know. You know.
[MARGARET]: I really don’t. Do you want me to get Maia?
[At this, FOX seems to snap back into reality for a moment.]
[FOX]: … Maia.
[MARGARET]: Yeah, I can get Maia. She’s not a scientist. She can help you.
[FOX]: … Yeah. Maia.
[MARGARET]: Okay. I’ll get her. I’ll bring her to you.
[FOX]: Don’t hurt her.
[MARGARET]: I won’t.
[MARGARET and JAIME exchange concerned glances.]

[TW: Discussion of animal death]
[MAIA]: Alright. Who’s hungry?
[RYAN]: Oh--thank you, Maia, you really didn’t have to.
[MAIA]: It’s no issue. I needed to use my hands for something.
[RYAN]: Seriously, take a break.
[MAIA starts serving bowls of soup. It’s a routine for her now--and there’s one more bowl than usual. She looks up, and her heart softens when she sees--]
[XAVIER]: Thanks.
[MAIA]: … Xavier. Hi.
[XAVIER]: Don’t get used to it.
[MAIA]: No, I hope I will.
[XAVIER]: [rolls eyes] Oh my God. Quit being sappy.
[MAIA]: Yeah, whatever, just--sit down. Be nice for once.
[MAIA pours herself a bowl and sits down.]
[MARGARET]: Thanks for making this, Maia. Sorry I couldn’t help out.
[MAIA]: Oh, it’s no trouble. How’s Fox?
[MARGARET]: Not good. She’s a bit more lucid, now, but thanks for helping me get her back to her room.
[MAIA]: No problem. I just wish we knew what caused it.
[JAIME]: … yeah. About that.
[JAIME stirs his soup and does not eat it.]
[JAIME]: The bio lab. It was… [clears throat]
[KENNY]: How so?
[JAIME]: There was a lot of… animals in there. Dead ones.
[MARGARET]: Oh, dear. Anything else?
[JAIME]: And a table. With--[chokes] Restraints. It was awful.
[KENNY]: Holy shit.
[JAIME]: … yeah.
[MAIA]: Don’t swear in front of Ellie.
[KENNY]: Don’t care.
[DAISY]: God, Kenny, what’s up your ass today?
[MAIA covers ELLIE’s ears.]
[MAIA]: Behave.
[ELLIE]: I’m being behaved.
[MAIA]: Not you, dear. [She glares at DAISY and KENNY]
[KATHLEEN]: Huh. For once I’m not the one being yelled at. Would you look at that?
[RYAN]: Can we please just all get along?
[KATHLEEN]: Yeah, yeah, getting along.
[XAVIER]: I’ll believe it when I see it.
[KATHLEEN glares at him, but offers no comment.]
[XAVIER]: What’s wrong? Cat got your tongue?
[KATHLEEN]: No, I’m just trying to behave myself. And you’re making it pretty damn tough.

- [One-on-one talk: The researcher] -
- [Fox’s room, 16:09] -
--
[MARGARET knocks on FOX’s door.]
[FOX]: Who?
[MARGARET]: It’s Maggie. I just want to talk.
[FOX]: No.
[MARGARET]: I won’t hurt you, but if you’re not comfortable, I don’t have to come in. You can stay in there, where you’re safe, and I can stay out here.
[...]
[FOX]: I still don’t wanna talk.
[MARGARET]: Okay. Are you sure? I’m sure you’ll feel better.
[...]
[FOX]: No. Leave me alone.
[MARGARET]: … Okay.
[With that, MARGARET walks away.]

[MAIA]: … Ryan?
[The air feels heavy. Too heavy. Too quiet. And MAIA is alone.]
[MAIA]: … Ryan. Where are you?
[More quiet. Her voice bounces off the stairwell walls. She takes a single step down the stairs--]
[MAIA]: Shit!
[... and trips. She tries to scramble back up, but her slippers are just that now. Slippery. She slips down a few more steps.]
[MAIA]: Ew, ew, ew, ew…
[KENNY]: Maia?!
[MAIA]: Oh, thank god! I fell in. Come on, help me--
[And then MAIA pauses. Something brushes against her leg.]
[KENNY]: Maia? What’s wrong?
[...]
[KENNY]: … are you okay? What happened?
[...]
[KENNY]: I’m turning on the lights. Wait here.
[KENNY switches on the lights--and immediately goes starkly pale. There’s something--someone--in the water with her.]
[KENNY]: o--oh God…
[MAIA]: … Kenny?
[KENNY]: … Maia. Maia, I need you to do exactly what I tell you to do right now.
[MAIA]: … I--I… Kenny, I’m scared. Tell me what’s going on.
[KENNY blinks tears out of his eyes and reaches a hand out for her.]
[KENNY]: Maia, take my hand. And, whatever the fuck you do, do not look behind you.
[MAIA]: Kenny, what the fuck is behind me?
[KENNY]: [muttering] More like who the fuck.
[KENNY clamps a hand over his mouth. MAIA freezes--and curiosity overtakes her. She looks over her shoulder…]
[MAIA]: HOLY SHIT!
[KENNY]: I told you not to!
[.... And screams.]
[MONODOODLE]: Attention, students. A body has been discovered.
[KENNY]: Maia--Maia, come on, take my hand.
[MAIA]: Holy shit, holy shit, holy shit…
[Lying face down in the water…]
[... Is RYAN MARIN.]
Student Spotlight - Ryan Marín
[RYAN knocks on the door of the interview room.]
[RYAN]: Hello?
[...]
[MONODOODLE]: Are you a vampire or something? Do you need me to invite you in? I called you already.
[RYAN]: U--um--sorry.
[He opens the door and sits down.]
[MONODOODLE]: You’ve been selected as the seventh of your peers to recieve a student spotlight.
[RYAN]: Oh, that’s great! … right?
[MONODOODLE]: It is. Can we start the interview now?
[RYAN]: Sure thing. Ask away!
[MONODOODLE]: Question one. What made you want to become a teacher?
[RYAN]: Oh, well… I’ve always wanted to help people. I wasn’t always the nicest kid, I admit that. When I was… ten, I’d say, my sister was being bullied very heavily. I went to a couple people about it, and the first person who actually listened was my teacher. He helped me through a lot.
[MONODOODLE]: Ryan, have you ever read one of those headlines that sounds heartwarming until you think too hard about it?
[...]
[RYAN]: No.
[MONODOODLE]: That’s one of them.
[...]
[RYAN]: Oh.
[MONODOODLE]: Question two. Please rank your peers’ chances of survival.
[...]
[RYAN]: That’s not really a question.
[MONODOODLE]: Do it anyway.
[RYAN]: I don’t really want to.
[MONODOODLE]: Do it.
[...]
[RYAN]: Well… I’m not too sure. I was convinced Kat would make it, but… that didn’t happen, I suppose. I would say I can see Kenny and Fox surviving. Maia, too. They’ve got the fight left in them. The others, I hope, but…
[...]
[RYAN]: I… don’t know if I’m necessarily going to make it out.
[...]
[MONODOODLE]: Question three. To what extent do you agree with Kenny McKellar’s assertions about your fellow classmates during the trial?
[...]
[RYAN]: I don’t want to say anything. He was a bit unnecessarily cruel, but… I think he meant well. I think he was dealing with a lot of stress at the moment. However, bringing up Maia’s father was uncalled for.
[MONODOODLE]: Uncalled for, was it?
[RYAN]: Yes. We all know it’s a source of a lot of shame for her.
[MONODOODLE]: That leads directly to question four. What are your thoughts on Xavier Hassan? After the file incident, has your opinion on Xavier Hassan changed? Do you still believe you can help him?
[RYAN]: Oh. He’s… he’s an odd one. I’ll say that. I certainly hope he can recover from everything. I admit, he’s not the kindest. I’m sure, though, that he’s trying his hardest to improve.
[...]
[MONODOODLE]: I will remind you that none of your classmates will see this.
[...]
[RYAN]: I’ll admit, I’m upset with him. I’m upset that, after so much effort put in by all three of us, he simply undid all of it. I’m upset that he pulled Maia and Daisy into it, too. However, I also want to say that I still think he can change. I think everyone can change.
[...]
[MONODOODLE]: You’re very optimstic.
[RYAN]: I try to be.
[MONODOODLE]: Question five--What was your relationship with Margaret Baker? How do you think the group will move on, if at all, from her death?
[RYAN]: Well, that’s two questions in one!
[MONODOODLE]: Answer them both.
[RYAN]: Okay, okay. Well, my relationship with Maggie… well. We were close, I’ll say that. I admit, I did have a bit of a crush on her. How could you not? She’s beautiful, she’s kind, she…
[...]
[RYAN]: She was, anyway. As for… ah, the second part…
[...]
[RYAN]: I don’t think any of us could quite be the same again. That trial, losing her… it took a lot out of us.
[MONODOODLE]: Why do you say that?
[RYAN shrugs.]
[MONODOODLE]: You’re hard to interview. Question six--Which death do you think could have been most easily prevented?
[RYAN]: Hm.
[His brows draw together. He leans back in his chair.]
[RYAN]: Well, if I had to think about it… I suppose the death I could’ve most easily prevented would have been Gabriel’s. And, by that extent, wouldn’t that mean we stop Henry from dying, too? That’s my answer. Gabriel and Henry.
[MONODOODLE]: Really?
[RYAN]: Really.
[MONODOODLE]: I would’ve thought that you would’ve said Maggie.
[...]
[RYAN]: I tried. I really did.
[...]
[MONODOODLE]: Question nine. If you had to forgive one of the killers, who?
[RYAN]: Charlotte. I cared deeply about Nadia, I really do. Henry as well. But Charlotte tried to sacrifice herself for the rest of us. Tom was in on it, and I do believe she would have owned up to it herself had Evan not gotten involved. It’s awful, of course, but…
[...]
[MONODOODLE]: Question eight. Have you questioned your faith at any point during the killing game?
[...]
[RYAN]: I think I’m going to hell.
[MONODOODLE]: Okay, you’re getting right into it, huh.
[RYAN]: I don’t think I’ve done enough good in my life. I woke up here determined to keep things from going wrong and fix everything again, but now I’ve just messed things up for everyone. I can’t be a good person. I keep trying and I keep failing. And--and how could God allow this to happen? If he really is all-knowing, and all-powerful, and all-good, how is it that these people can go around harming us? And for what? Money? Power?
[RYAN’s voice breaks. He dries his eyes.]
[RYAN]: But I’m fine. I’m fine.
[MONODOODLE]: Question nine. Which of your classmates are you most concerned for?
[RYAN]: Oh, who am I not concerned for? Daisy’s an addict now, Xavier has an eating disorder, Evan’s a ticking time bomb, Kenny tried to kill himself. Maia might be one of the meanest people I’ve ever met. Jaime. Ellie’s dad hates her and she has no idea. Fox has PTSD or something way fucking worse! Who wouldn’t I be concerned for!? We’re a complete and total mess!
[RYAN starts crying]
[RYAN]: Just get this over with. Please.
[MONODOODLE]: If you say so. Do you ever think of yourself?
[It’s like a switch flips in RYAN’s mind. He dries his tears and swallows the lump in his throat, straightens his back, and Mr. Marin, the beloved teacher, shines back through again.]
[RYAN]: Of course not.
