there's something about the phrasing here that just strikes me as a little.... something. not ODD per se but just a little. desperate? so, this is before makoto accuses him of having everything handed to him, but we KNOW how he reacts to that. it's something he's genuinely really sensitive about
so like. the usage of "now you understand, right?" and that he's not "merely" the child of modern day nobility. its like. hes kind of setting makoto up to agree with him. because all this bragging in his ftes.... for one, his accomplishments are kind of all he knows how to talk about, because no one previously in his life cared AT ALL about anything else about him. and for two, while he is confident in himself, that confidence is selective and fragile. he has to CONSTANTLY reinforce its existence because it's barely there, like a mirage; true confidence wouldnt need someone to rely on others agreeing that he is confident/smart/accomplished etc. and true confidence wouldnt hinge on largely, things byakuya DOES rather than who he IS as a person
which is i think why its a lot more obvious here than normal. this is about him as a person, not his accomplishments which can be measured by a metric of Good versus Bad. he's also saying "look at my accomplishments. now agree with me that i'm good, ok? i'm not merely the child of modern day nobility. i'm more than that."
it's just a little bit desperate. like he's aching for an answer. like the only way he can concieve of being friends with someone is to show himself off as a Good Product and a Hard Worker and a Smart Ultimate and a Confident Heir. like he needs makoto to agree with him that he's good and worthy and more than just a nepo baby. because if makoto doesn't agree with byakuya then byakuya won't believe it either. he has no sense of internal self worth because all his life his worth was in fact measured by those accomplishments he keeps boasting about
like i do think he is legitimatley trying to get makoto to like him here, especially as the ftes go on and byakuya stops talling about himself and starts tentatively asking about "the 99%." he just doesn't know how to connect with people because he was never taught to, and maybe even actively discouraged from doing so. he wants people to like him he needs people to like him, or at the VERY least agree that he's confident and secure in himself. but if someone (makoto) is repeatedly nice to him.... he starts to get a little desperate. as shown by the fact that he tries to pay makoto to be around him, both in thh and in the ending of school mode (where it is NOT a test, so he was BSing in his fte lmfaaoo)

also, some spoilers, but stuff i discussed on my blog before
quickly: the plot is that its a 1972 gala that everyone is at, but then (in the prologue) its revealed that its the nwp and 40 years passed. so there is the nwp gala and the "real gala" that actually happened in 1972, and that is talked about here !
Taro Storlokken-Lund -- you might have seen this name around. but, if you're togamipilled enough to follow this blog, you probably can pick up that this is actually Kijo Togami. he is referred as "taro" or "kijo" somewhat interchangeably. this used to be a chapter 6 twist, but not anymore, so i've been a lot more open about his real name. barring that....
he is cold, distant, and a massive fucking liar. he is the unreliable narrator ever. kijo is a person who has a very scary looking face when he's nervous.... but he just never told anyone that and let everyone be intimidated by him. he was scouted by hope's peak as the ultimate liar, a scouting he uhhh rejected. because to accept it would be to admit you're a liar.... and the true ultimate liar would never do that!
kijo is a very complicated character and i can't really sum him up easily. the guy ever. his somewhat tag is #taro fanganguy but also the actual #kijo togami tag on this blog has stuff that applies to him too
he had a little brother named Toya.
Ahito Komaeda -- also just called Ahi sometimes. he's nagito's dad, and very very schizophrenic. to the point where he can't take care of himself and needs constant care, but that means having to deal with the loss of autonomy and ableism that comes with it. but he needs it. he doesn't have a lot of friends, but kijo is his best friend. yes they're fucking they are absolutely fucking and yes ahi has a very obvious crush on kijo (again, everyone knows) but they never talked abt it and were never an item
ahi himself is a very VERY anxious and paranoid man, but he does genuinely try his best to be nice, and also he's. a freak. kijo lit someone's kitchen on fire once and ahi gave him a very expensive elaborate lighter for his birthday AFTER this. he taught kijo how to induce hallucinations in him and yes this was a sex thing. he's the one who planned the gala the game takes place in, and he deliberatley hired an EXTREMELY unfitting choice for live entertainment, so people like.... maybe might buy a plate at his gala just to come and gawk at what the crazy schizo is doing. it's sad, but ahi is used to exploiting himself as a thing to be gawked at in order to get some kind of end result. his gala plan DID work, and he's proud of himself for pulling one over on them and laughing at how stupid they are for falling for it.... but also he knows every single fucking one of those people* do not see him as a person. so. um. yeah.
*(the real-life gala had a LOT more guests; most of the actual cast is at least trying to be good about it)

Meijiro Amami -- also called Meiji. he's the token pervert friend and lowkey a piece of shiiiit. he cannot and will not stop fucking saying slurs, and makes decisions without even considering that the other people involved, like, have emotions about it. the Thing about meiji is that he has undiagnosed aspd ( <- that's the sociopath one) and his environment is like actively encouraging his worst traits while also at the same time exacerbating the mental illness and making him more and more miserable. so . also umm he's funny he calls people faggots a lot. he calls ahi a schizo a lot but also when ahi wanders off at galas, meiji helps kijo look for him
meiji and kijo are Also Friends. meiji is a social climber and befriended kijo for that. their friendship was like purely transactional at first (in high school) but over the years it develops into a really really strong bond actually. even then, meiji is not so good with serious emotions about it. there was An Incident that meiji can't even think about because the severity of it scares him so much. i have a little fic about him if you wanna know more :) (child abuse, a lil nsfw, kinda bloody at a point, slurs)
in the fangan, he's NOT loyal to kijo like AT ALL when things get bad and immediately starts sucking up to tokuichi instead. speaking of...
Tokuichi Towa -- tokuichi fucking towa fans rise up. you know from that one part of ultra despair girls. rise up. he's outwardly nice but kijo describes him as someone who will use you without you realizing it. tokuichi Needs power and is always feuding with kijo as they are both at the veryyyyy tippy top of the affluent world. literally the first thing tokuichi ever did when kijo showed up in japan was spread a rumor that it was kijo who made this really huge anonymous donation to the chugoku-ha ( <- this is radical communism) like literally just to make kijo's reputation worse so towa is on top socially. in the real world, towa apologized for it, and kijo made towa go to everyone and admit it was all made up. and after that...... well i mean, i'm getting off topic!

Maina Shishiki -- her family is like japanese lockheed martin, kind of. she is the oldest child and the one set to actually inherit the company, Even Though She's A Woman Gasp!! very "do you think she utilized girl power effectively when she manufactured weapons." her presence at The Gala was a political move. for propaganda. (gala was for an anti nuke group, she was supposed to be there to tout the narrative of "we (the company) are anti nuke!! dont ask us about the things we are making though that's. well they're not nukes. so." type beat yk? anyway
maina herself is really nice but ohhh my god oh my god. she is a people pleaser but like so so so much where she tries to please EVERYONE and then pleases no one. she's uncomfortable around serious subjects because it might force her to pick a side in something. she has a little crush on kijo when the real gala happened, and eventually had 4 kids with him. she is an ok parent. she is Fine. its a long story
she is the centrist ever but her niceness towards everyone is not fake like she is completely fr. she is legitimately so nice and a wonderful friend but only a fair weather one
Yoshie Sumatsuki -- i might change her last name tbh. she is the ultimate thespian! well former ult thespian, bc she graduated. what evar. she is kijo's kind of unofficial girlfriend, it is REALLY vague. she follows him around to a creepy degree and very much objectifies him. it's weird. after The Gala in real life, she ends up ummmmmm raping him. which i do not reveal until like chapter three. its tgfkbait because im meaannn okay im fucking meannn. im mean. and i think it would be funny . because i'm mean. and also some thematics but this is long enough already

Kitan Shishiki -- maina's 13 year old little brother. he's mischevous and acts childish but also really wants to mingle with the adults rather than the other young teenagers at galas. he's attached to kijo, because their names share the same "ki" kanji, and they were both born on matching dates. so they match! kijo met kitan's twin sister exactly once and she was entranced by him. then he met kitan at the next gala and Suddenly that sister is Sick and Can't Go Places. I wonder whatHappened Here
people (mainly his family) put up with it because he is cute but he is 13 so like. it is starting to Not Be Cute Anymore and kitan can TELL he can TELL WHAT THEY THINK OF HIM. he's still very attached to kijo. who just lets it happen ngl
Tsuguki Utsugi -- i totally know how that last name connects to anyhting. totally. (i dont knaur. i have some ideas im playing with but i havent chosen one yet definitively) she is tokuichi's girlfiend and very meek and shy. like she is 100% convinced everyone hates her, because tbh they DO, the affluents do in fact think she sucks lowkey. she is from a wayyyyy lower class than tokuichi and it is kind of clear that he's only dating her so he can watch her stumble around affluent life. she is EXTREMELY perceptive about body language
Bijou Bichuu -- i always forget how to spell that. she is a really popular model and meiji's ex gf. he broke up w her bc she was better than hunting than him (and his dad liked her better.) she is a really good sharpshooter and her whole deal is having to hide her whole entire self (including having a stage name she goes by all the time) for her entire fucking life. she has a dumb blonde girl demeanor when she talks to people because That's What She's Supposed To Be Like, but she's actually a really good leader... buuut no one takes her seriously when she drops the act :(
ok that was all the affluents. technically like, tsuguki, isn't affluent, but she is WITH an affluent and she is In That Social Group. now, the outsiders!
Kazuo Matsuzaki -- remember i said ahi hired some really weird choice for entertainment? yeah i meant a random indie punk band. this is this guy's punk band. the band is called die, kazuo matsuzaki, die, and yes his name is a reference to beta leon and his band's name is a reference to that video of beta leon's execution . he is the frontman and sings but he can also play guitar
kazuo is very very hopeful. he assumes the best in people, but tentatively, until they prove him wrong. he is also psychic like actually. RARELY he gets these visions that come true with 100% certainty, but mostly it's just like, vibes. fun facts, kijo would love to have this power but kazuo sees it as a curse. something something thematic resonance. but even though kazuo knows that about his visions he keeps trying to change them. he keeps trying new tactics like he ALWAYS keeps trying. fun facts, once, his visions did change. the season the event takes place in changes TWICE. i wonder what that was! anyway
he is ryukyuan and From Okinawa and speaks Okinawan Japanese (the dialect). he doesn't really talk about it but it's important to him and he has straight up broken up with past boytoys because they refused to even try to give a fuck. he's been homeless most his life, but he's like very recently Not anymore. yay! he has a rich boyfriend that got him the job at ahi's gala
in the fangan, kazuo likes to tell stories about his rich boyfriend but in a bait and switchy way, to fuck with the affluents. eg telling everyone he has a rich boyfriend, and THEN telling them he used to be homeless. waits until someone asks "lol i bet you don't want your "boyfriend" to learn that huh??" like. insinuating that kazuo ought to be ashamed. and the switchup is kazuo goes "oh lol we met while i was Still homeless :) he knows :)" like. kazuo is well aware that the affluents Do Not Believe that any affluent would love kazuo because they see kazuo as Lesser Than for one reason or another (everyone has a different justification). so kazuo loves playing into those asusmptions and switching up to prove them wrong. they fall for it every time kazuo loves doing it. kijo thinks this is really funny

Itsuko Kabeyasawa -- she traveled along with kazuo and is kind of an older sister to him. she sees him as extremely naive and needing protection. for itsuko herself, she is a lesbian who keeps getitng into bad relationships and breaking up fast and uhhhh she is the bad part tbh. she is extremely emotionally unavailable and odes not take a single fucking thing seriously. she's been really hardened by her life both before and after kazuo (but most of it was before tbh) and it uhhhh shows. her and bijou were made to fuck each others brains out but what if god said uhhh its 1972. she is the audio gal for the band and doesn't actually play an instrument. she is REALLY good with technology!!! she used to fuck men for money. so there is also uhh that. she is so fucking mean i love her so much
Ryuu Urasawa -- kazuo's bassist. first friend kazuo made in akihabara, and kazuo lived on his family's couch for a little while. ryuu has an older sister who is a nurse, and an older-older brother who was drafted at the tail end of the war and is now like. really really mentally ill. uhh he died in a psych ward. so ryuu just kind of has to live with all that. he kind of idolizes yakuza and gangster culture but he really really is not fucking cut out for that life. he is honestly just kind of a chill guy but really unserious... like, if meiji is that center-of-right guy that "doesn't care about politics, then ryuu is a center-of-left guy that "doesn't care about politics," except for like. vaugely agreeing with stuff that concerns specifically him or his family. there is a running joke with ryuu and meiji where they keep insulting each other based on their class and its literally like. that meme with the two kingdoms. his disgusting showcase of wealth suit vs my noble display of wealth gangster clothes. his disgusting unserious povvo speak vs my noble saying slurs all the fucking goddamn time.

Osamu/Suzune Akinari -- trans girl, osamu is her deadname and suzune is her real name. i'm not sure how out she should be in the game itself, lol. again i have several different ideas but i'm not sure which one. in the real gala, she was still an egg. i kind of wanted to have her still an egg in the fangan itself, but then i was like nahhh, but then i was like hold on tho maybe....? im not sure. haha! she plays the saxophone for the band! when she's boymoding she is really fucking shy, but once she comes out she's a lot more confident and outspoken. ryuu is bi and he had a tiny little crush on her for a while but then she came out and he had a BIG crush on her because of how confident she got. she's a bartender and a drug dealer also, she would rather to drug dealing over like, sex work, to survive. and she would do ANYTHING to survive. but why does she have to work so hard? well, okay. she has a roommate. two roommates, actually, at some point-- itsuko shows up. itsuko keeps getting fired and this other roommate cannot work like at all. but why? well....
Minamu Mizuhiki -- the band's drummer. it would use it/its pronouns if it could, so that's what i'm using. in the game, it just speaks in third person. its whole deal is "really fucking creepy ass weirdo." that's what it likes to be known as too lol, for reasons i can't really spoil ahahaha!!! it is also disabled. out of all the outsiders, it is oddly one of the nicest ones to kijo specifically. its only explanation is that it can see his heart. what ever man who cares anymore. sure miniamu

Clementin Bouchart -- outsider number six, and not in the band. she is a french woman who frankly is not rich enough to have been invited and also she knows no one here and also she does not know japanese. she is so so so so fucking confused. in the prologue, kijo offers to help her get her bearings. she is kind of sassy and a little mean. her family owns an apiary in franceeee and genuinely GENUINELY she is so so sweet but she does not let anyone push her aorund or take advantage of her for a second. she is however maybe a little way too fucking nosy. i love her however <3 this is a post about clem with more about her :) she is you know whoooooos mommm

so my take on byakuya is that he does what he wants because he thinks he's smart and it's logical, but also he was raised to be Amazing and got his self worth from wether or not he IS, ergo that confidence in himself DEPENDS on outsode validation. he'll make a desicion in confidence but NEEDS external validation that this is a Good Idea. he is so fucking ashamed of it so he tries to be subtle but he asserts things about himself CONSTANTLY because he really really needs everyone around him to agree so badly
all this to say: i think he's transmasc BUT if he gets close enough to you he will compulsively come out BUT then talk about how easy it was to do and he didnt even hesitate at all and nothing stood in his way and he achieved victory over even his own biology. and he's standing there with that smugass smile about to throw up at the IDEA of the person he's talking to not agreeing. because they need to agree it was a good choice. he has to be perfect forever in everyones' eyes. or at least the eyes he cares about impressing (the eyes he cares about impressing are: anyone who is repeatedly nice to him.)
