Sonic Screwdriver (Modified for both 10 & 11!)
So way back before Netflix, when we would all take a long weekend to drive back to my friend's tiny apartment in our college town and marathon the newest season of Doctor Who to be released on region one DVD, the original Sonic Screwdriver was born. This was during the Reign of Tennant but the recipe is really for both 9 & 10, since the screwdriver was blue for both their tenures. In the years since, I've updated it to include a version for 11, though I'm still working on how to tweak it so it's not just a green version of the original drink. Suggestions are always welcome on how to better perfect the 11th Doctor version!
Sonic Screwdriver (9th & 10th Doctor)
3 oz. (2 shots) citrus vodka (Absolut Citron is great for this)
1.5 oz. (1 shot) Rose's Blue Raspberry cocktail mixer
Diet clear soda (regular is too sweet)
Lemon-Raspberry ice cubes
Blue glow stick bracelets*
Twist or wedge of lemon for garnish
Drop four Lemon-Raspberry ice cubes in a highball glass and add the shots of vodka and Rose's mixer. Activate the blue glow stick and use it to stir the mix. Leave in the glow stick and top off the glass with clear diet soda. Garnish with a lemon twist or wedge. [The best things about this drink are that it glows blue AND that it never waters down because you're using lemon raspberry ice cubes that just keep on adding flavor as they melt. Okay, and also the Rose pun in the cocktail mix].
Sonic Screwdriver (11th Doctor)
1.5 oz. (1 shot) vodka
3 oz. (2 shots) Midori (green melon liqueur)
Lemon flavored Perrier
Orange-Lime ice cubes
Green glow stick bracelets
Twist or wedge of lime to garnish
Drop four orange-lime ice cubes in a highball glass and add the shots of vodka and Midori. Activate the green glow stick and stir the mixture. Leave in the stick and top off the glass with lemon Perrier (or other sparkling water). Garnish with a twist of lime. [This one is still kind of a work in progress--I'm playing around with different citrus flavors, but the ice cubes are definitely a keeper].Â
Enjoy!
*Don't let the glow stick break! If you need to use a plastic cocktail stirrer to mix the Rose's and vodka go ahead; the blue stick is mostly to get the glowing effect anyway. Just be careful--those chemicals are not good for eating.
Fandom Cocktails 101: Introduction
So at some point a couple of months ago I promised KC that I'd start breaking out the cocktails I'd created over the years for various fandom theme parties. I'm secretly Mrs. Dalloway and entertaining is among my top five favorite activities in all of life, with summertime the absolute best time to try new things. Nothing pleases me more than when my best friend pulls up with her bin of Martha Stewart Living holiday issues and we start diagramming dessert options for Independence Day trifle or testing out soup recipes for black coffin-shaped cornbread chili bowls at Halloween. She's currently planning an elaborate "Pony Party" that includes Unicorn Poop cookies and cotton candy flavored vodka.Â
I know this is a library blog, and most of you won't care a wit for entertaining things, but on the off chance you do like fandom cocktails and strangely shaped food, the tags will be:
