was thinking about official playstation magazine raiden again (y'know. dig these child-bearing hips raiden) and how those ppl were simultaneously so disgusted by raiden and so horny for him and it led me to thinking about modern fandom (specifically the tumblr/AO3 portion cause that's a lot of what I interact with) and I was thinking about characters like raiden and cloud ff7 and shinji neongenesisevangelion (to name a few prominent examples but these aren't the only ones of course) and how fucked up it is that so many people in online fandom look at these characters who are vaguely effeminate and generally feel deeply alienated from masculinity, the main thing they do that's like. traditionally masculine is either a persona they put on or something they've been forced into or both, and it makes them miserable - for this kind of character it also often leaves them vulnerable to grooming - and this alienation and failure to properly perform the masculinity that's expected of them is frequently noted both by other characters within the text and by audiences outside of it reacting to them homophobically/transmisogynistically, and these online fandom people will look at these characters and be like "omg trans man spotted!" it's like. a degree or two separated from how fucked up it is when people headcanon characters like chihiro danganronpa or gwyndolin dark souls, who are obviously trans women but written in canon as fetishized disposable femboys, as transmasc, but like. only a degree or two
You can tell transfem ralsei is cannon because half the people who hate it 'disprove' it by saying the most transmisogynistic rhetoric you've ever heard.

a lot of people in fandom like to go "transfem and transmasc headcanons can coexist! this character is trans in all directions!!" but don't actually believe that in practice because every time a transfem headcanon is posted about they act really fucking weird about it
i'm in a fandom (eddsworld) where a character (tord) is pretty popularly headcanoned as both transmasc and transfem. i headcanon him as transmasc. there's nothing in canon supporting either, so it makes sense that there'd be people interpreting him differently. i don't personally get the transfem headcanon, but i'm not gonna be in the replies like "Um... Well I see him as transmasc...."
you can't say "they can coexist" if yall react to the other existing with this really weird territorial behavior. for the love of god, just let transfem headcanons exist. they aren't taking anything away from you.

me personally I don’t care if jax is a little mean bc i myself will give examples of implicit trans girls in popular media who are very passive and silenced individuals who don’t get any agency after their own mistreatment. if we go look at anime specific examples, chihiro is murdered brutally by a man and mocked even after her death and is forced to forgive her murderer. the girl in my pfp, armin is sexually assaulted as a scapegoat for femininity and bends over backwards to please men in her life that’s never reciprocated. im sure ppl have other very valid examples but to me these stick out as some of the most extreme cases. despite their mistreatment in the media they are from, they are aggressively referred to as men.
these trans women aren’t even allowed to call themselves women despite facing obvious transmisogyny that intentional or not is reminiscent of transfem experiences. they are abused quite frankly and fridged to motivate men yet ppl still deny that they are women and end up calling them “femboys” or “cross dressers” in order to justify the very misogynistic treatment they go through.
so when jax, an unapologetically mean and brash example of a character who is practically trans herself, does things that are unpalatable to audiences because she herself is a complex and deeply flawed but outright sympathetic marginalized character, i can’t help but think of the previous examples that i have listed. neither of these characters get a chance to be as headstrong or as spiteful as she does. one bc they are from misogynistic anime’s and two, bc their creator has no intention in them being trans besides using them for transphobic jokes. jax isn’t like that. she is antagonistic, sure, but she is also someone who has my utmost respect for being a complicated and hard to figure out trans female character who is well written and fully fleshed out as she is allowed to feel anger and resentment.
tadc isn’t without its flaws, and some stuff is very worth criticizing but the fact that a canon angry trans woman character who is allowed to behave in ways that people normally do not expect women to behave in, is still given a sympathetic and ultimately beautiful story is really revolutionary. i see people constantly bring up the fact that she is “mean” as an excuse to not find her compelling because they can’t handle an angry trans woman despite jax being so much more than that. Her relationship to her body and the fact that pomni is able to awaken repressed feelings is evidence enough of how well written she is.
you should have sympathy for her. you should feel for her whether you like her or not because at the end of the day she is a huge step for transfem and trans lesbian representation in a way that neither chihiro or armin could attempt to do. (these are personal examples but again im sure there are others).
i mean just literally look at a trans woman who was angry in media, Jules from euphoria and how she was silenced and essentially abused into a comphet relationship. she was the main character in season one and in the end has no agency or personal growth.
ultimately, how people react the jax and the rep she provides is a litmus test for transfeminism in media that will probably be talked about for a very long long time.
