I think the thing with a lot of online discourse is basically confirmation bias with extra steps.
Say I don't like something. A trope, a trend, a character, an actor, a show, a franchise, whatever. Don't have any real reason, just find it annoying, nothing that deep.
Now I go online and read a post about how, if you twist it around and jump through hoops and squint, the thing I already didn't like was actually MORALLY bad. Oh! AHA! I KNEW there was a reason I didn't like it! Not just cause I didn't like it, it's because my immorality senses were tingling and warning me of the danger! Now "THING IS BAD" is my moral grandstand and a facet of my online personality, instead of doing any actual good in the world.
