Fandom Fact #1
Fandom: Music
Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain was an avid activist in women's rights.Â
In the 1990s there was a large movement within the music community as all-girl bands were starting to become more prevalent, leveling out the gender playing field. Cobain became directly connected to the movement when he started dating one of the members of a girl band that was leading the charge. But even when they broke up, his voice in the movement never wavered. Before feminism was encouraged, Kurt Cobain was a feminist. While others went quiet, he stood up.
In one moment that I particularly love, after performing on Saturday Night Live Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and Cobain all kissed during the credits as a little “fuck you” to whatever homophobes may have be watching.
He is a rock star we can be proud defined a generation. An equal rights activist for women, those who dressed in drag, and gays in a time where the AIDs pandemic was at a peak. This fallen star is one we can look up to. It’s a fact not talked about nearly enough, but it should be far more wide spread. I have so much respect for this musician and everything he had done and I hope he is in a better place now.
