Intro to Lagrange Point (1991) | Famicom
Game Review: Lagrange Point
Taking place in the distant future at a space colony, the people of these locations are under siege of engineered creatures gone rouge. My first impressions were on the music as it is the only Famicom game to ever make use of the VRC7 chip, giving it a sound comparable to that of the SEGA Genesis. A unique change of typical 8-Bit music. There are arranged albums and the OST on vinyl so it is definitely worth putting on my wishlist to get.
The different cutscenes of traveling are very satisfying to watch. Spritework is definitely a quality I judge in story-based RPGS. Every character is enjoyable as well, the game has a fun atmosphere and the antagonists are cartoonishly villainy. More than three characters can be recruited and the extras would stay in a lounge at a satellite base. There is replay value with the game to use those extra characters because some NPCs would have unique dialogue towards characters you picked to walk around as in the party.
There are many items to collect and use which relate to the progress of the story. Battle combat is in typical RPG fashion of either manually deciding moves or an auto-battle feature, but what I like about the auto-battle is that each character has their own tactic. They would say a battle charge and do their stuff, specials or healing focused, depending on whoβs leading. Thereβs also a thing called βtechsβ that can be used during or out of battle. Can be for healing or whatever, but I like that Gene has one thatβs called βcheerβ and it cures nervousness to βhypeβ up the person. Other ailments present can be βmaimedβ or βanemiaβ. Buy eyewash or iron-pills to help yourself about it.
The visuals and animations are so immersive and nice. Adds more to see than just text dialogue or sprites bumping around in a birdβs eye view of a map. This is the longest famicom game Iβve played so far. The only gripe Iβve had was the enemy encounter rate. Canβt go 8 steps before getting touched by something. I used a walkthrough at points to know where to go; the single one from 2009 that uses the literal translation for words than the updated English translation. Iβm sure theres more up to date stuff out there in Japanese since this has been the one Famicom game Iβve seen loads of fanart for. But yeah, Lagrange Point is a great game if you can handle old RPGS, and be fueled by even greater music.
