After the leaves had been swept and the cobwebs organized into stacks, I took hold of my twig staff and climbed atop the Forest Watchtower. • It was my duty to protect the forest from danger, but no peril had ever come our way. No wolves had ravaged the villages, no deadly mushrooms had infected the populus, not even a thunderstorm had bothered to roll over our boring plot of land! • My best friend, Svard the Slippery, constantly reassured me, “I know you are concerned Fafnir, but do not worry. Together, we can clobber any foe that comes against us! I’d like to see them try!” • But I wasn’t worried about the danger, no. I was afraid that nothing would ever happen. Was I doomed to sit atop the Watchtower forever? #FafnirInktober Day 3: • “ I had just sprawled out for a mid-day nap when I was startled by a terrible screeching ruckus. I hopped on my feet in a panic, but was disappointed to see it was only Svard howling to get my attention. • Before I could roll back into bed he gripped my arm and dragged me down the stairs crying, “Come quick! Come quick! It’s here, it’s happening!” I tore myself free from his grip and demanded, “What’s coming?” • Just then a ravenous possum burst through the treelines, shrieking as it ripped through the underbrush. Fastened to it’s head was a long branch with a frightened bird bound to the tip like bait on a fishing line. The possum was ferociously snapping its jaws, desperate to devour her. • This was it! This was my chance to put my magic to the test! • My enthusiasm must’ve been poorly concealed because Svard questioned, “Dude, why are you smiling? This is serious!” I gripped my twig staff and held it high.
