Edith, caught by this [authorship] craze, borrowed this volume from me and stuck her bookplate into it. She then covered the opposite flyleaf with her cipher-seeking calculations, which disfigured it horribly.
George Bernard Shaw on lending his First Folio facsimile to children’s author Edith Nesbit and having it returned in less-than pristine condition. She was searching for hidden ciphers that proved Shakespeare didn’t write the plays he wrote.
