Face Scan, My Story
So about a week ago I finally downloaded the new Face_Scan app that my friends had talked about NONSTOP for the past weeks. I saw how much fun my friends had while making videos using the apps Deep Fake mode, and I felt left out so I gave in. Ā My Instagram was filled with deep fake videos of me in all kinds of movies. The funnies clip was a clip from E.T where my face was printed on E.T so he looked like me. Iām surprised how good the app worked, there wasnāt any errors or bad prints, so the makers of the software had done a really good job. I became obsessed with the app, and I couldnāt put my phone down for days, that was until I started receiving weird emails. At first, I didnāt think much of it, but after a while I started reading them, and the first ones were spam but the last ones Iāve received contained warnings. Random strangers were sending out warnings about using the Face_Scan app, saying that the company behind were selling our faces and our information to other companies.
The next day I received a text from a friend of mine and he said that he also got these emails, so I started doing some research on Face_Scan apps. I quickly found out that the media had been writing tons of articles, warning people about using these types of apps and that we should read the user agreement before accepting.
Of course I hadnāt read the user agreement, I never do, but I downloaded the app on a new phone and I noticed a section in the user agreement that stated that the company could indeed use our faces and since Iāve accepted it, I cant do anything but hope that they wont use my information. I went on reddit and found a thread about the app, people were telling all kinds of stories. One guy had seen several Instagram accounts with his picture and all his information, and when he tried to rapport it, nothing happened. The account was spreading hate content in his name, but Instagram didnāt seem to have the time to fix it.
A few days later a friend of mine sent a screenshot of a Facebook user with my face on the profile photo. It didnāt contain my name, but it was still my face. . I donāt know what to do, how do you delete something you donāt have control over? Do they own my face now? Do I need to get a plastic surgery to change my appearance completely? Iāve reported the profile to Facebook, and I guess ill have to wait and see if it disappears or if more profiles appear. Iāve found a forum on 4chan with more victims, there doesnāt seem to be any solution to it, since we all clicked Ā«acceptĀ» we all agreed to letting the company behind use our faces as they please. Ā
I only hope that people read this post and lead from my mistakes instead of ending up in the same position that Iām in. I guess that the solution for me is to do some intense researched and maybe Iāll find a way to delete my files, or I could wait it out. This might only be a faze, maybe the government will implement some sort of system that banns apps from selling our information. Maybe deep fakes for ordinary people will be over soon, and the focus shifts over to using it on more famous people like Kim Kardashian or Donald Trump. I think and hope that using ordinary peopleās faces are like a beta thing, but who knowsā¦
