A human body with the burden of fairy power could not sustain itself forever, and Kendra Sorenson knew this better than anyone.
Chapter 1
July 2006
Stifling, still air hung over Kendra, heavy with humidity and filled with the laughter happening thirty-five feet away. Redwood trees stretched to the sky, glimpses of the galaxy between their sparse leaves. Wet moss covered the fallen log that she sat on, and she knew her cargo pants looked a damp mess.
But, her hand. Her hand was the one thing she couldn’t look at.
Tremors flooded her body, and tears pulsed down her face, silently. She couldn't be loud. She didn’t want them to know.
The rest of the knights sat around a campfire Warren had built, celebrating their success with a boar that Trask had felled. They joked and drank, and no one had thought much of it when Kendra had coughed and then excused herself.
But, she knew she had a time limit ticking down. Warren would get worried soon, and she didn’t know what to do about that.
The moment she had coughed into her hand, she had felt it, the wetness coating her fingers. She had felt the panic and confusion and disgust, and she couldn’t face it.
But she had to. Or she would be reckoning with the others.
Kendra tore her eyes away from the stars and shining full moon above her, and looked down at the red across her hand, drying rusty orange across her palm and crusting in the divets. Her fingers trembled and her breathing shook like a snake’s rattle. Danger.
Logic kicked in with a machinery’s whine, the droning overtaking the incessant worry in her mind and soothing the trembling.
Did she hit a tooth?
Her tongue searched her enamel, but it didn’t catch on any loose roots.
Maybe just one too many hits to the stomach?
Her lungs expanded with each measured breath, but she didn’t feel bad. She didn’t feel faint or dizzy or sick.
It was just this.
So, it was fine.
It wasn’t the end of the world, like it had been a few months ago. It would never be that again.
Kendra tore a bit of her undershirt’s cotton off with her good hand, and then unscrewed her water bottle. She wet the scrap and took it to her bloody hand, scrubbing and scrubbing.
Flexing her newly clean hand, she let out a low breath of relief. Everything was fine. No need to worry anyone; least of all, her kind-of-coworkers. And to completely ensure that, she had to do one more, kind-of-really-gross thing.
Kendra took a swig of her water bottle, and knocked back the mix of watery blood, cleaning her teeth out. It wouldn’t do well to smile at anyone with red teeth.
