Griffin Puatu (Bluebeard)

Smooth and sophisticated and scary as all hell, Bluebeard has one of the coolest voices in the show. And that is all thanks to the absolutely fabulous Griffin Puatu. I felt so lucky to find such a talented actor for our ostensible series villain. He’s such an impressive range beyond the menacing lord Bluebeard, ex-legendary serial killer and patron of Fabletown.  Nicholas Shapiro (Lord Beast (Beast), Taxi Driver)

Nick had a really tough job from the outset of this project: play the role of Lord Beast in mid-transformation. He needed to be just coherent enough for an entirely audio-based performance, but also sound like he had teeth that were too big for his mouth. And boy, he really knocked it out of the park! Nick was kind enough to lend his voice for a second minor but fun role last minute, which Iam very grateful for. His stint as the disgruntled sarcastic taxi driver still makes me chuckle when I hear it on re-listens. Thank you, Nick, for giving life and relatability to Lord Beast and being a really great scene partner.

 Olivia Steele (Briar Rose)

Oh, this lady’s voice! Olivia did a fabulous job portraying the equally fabulous Briar Rose, aka Sleeping Beauty. I envisioned this high society New York fashionista character, and Olivia really brought that to life. I am also not ashamed to admit that Olivia and Eric’s performances as Briar and Flycatcher fueled the flames of my love of that little ‘ship. They had wonderful ‘on screen’ chemistry, and sold the heck out of their characters enough that I was compelled to write more scenes for them! Olivia, you’re a gem. Thank you so much for being a part of our series and bringing power and candor to the role of Briar Rose.

 Melissa Sternenberg (Cindy)

I seriously just wanna be besties with Cindy. Her portrayal is playful, sharp tongued, and confident, and brings so much life to our cast. Of our trio of Prince Charming’s ex-wives, Cindy had some dramatic deviations from the text of the original comic. New scenes, shifted storylines, and pushing up the narrative a bit (for those familiar with the comics). And Melissa has been more than up to the task, with a great sense of comedic timing and grasp of her character. Melissa’s also got a number of professional video games and media credits to check out, which I highly recommend. Like so many of the cast, Melissa’s been really down for whatever my scripts threw at her. Whether it was sword fighting or witty banter, she brought such joy to one of my favorite characters in the show. Thank you for all your work, Melissa! The character of Cinderella, and our show as a whole, has been richer with you as a part of it.

 Cliff Thompson (Bigby Wolf)

The frickin’ holy grail. Very professional and kind, with a keen intuition for acting and delivery choices, enthusiasm for whatever the script is asking of him, and one of those voices that just settles into your brain as canon. Like, just listen to this guy! Cliff, you legit are the voice of Bigby Wolf forever in my brain. Thank you for taking on so much responsibility and a heck of a vocal workload on this fan project. You were instrumental in bringing this show to life and I will be forever grateful. It’s been a great pleasure working with you on Fables Radio, Sherriff.

 Angela McCain (Lady Beauty, Mary, & Narrator, Etc)

Well, that’s a wrap on my cast profile pieces! Though I guess I should plug myself a little, since I’m in the cast as well.

By sheer virtue of being the showrunner, I often found the need to fill in for a number of characters who I either didn’t find the right VA fit for, or that I just plum forgot existed (see diner waitress, cell phone voicemail robot, etc). I’m peppered all over the series in little roles, as well as Beauty and Mary, in addition to being the narrator on the front and tail end of each episode. What started as a production necessity turned into a hobby, and I’ve really caught the VO and audiodrama bugs. Thank you to all our listeners and followers for your kind words and encouragement. Not sure if I’ll attempt anything more than amateur work, but I feel so fortunate to have had the experience I’ve had with Fables Radio. This was my very first audio and collaborative project on this scale, and to not only complete it, but to feel so proud and excited by it after over a full year seems to be a rarity in the amateur industry. I threw this little pet project into the ether, and discovered some amazing, generous, and talented people who I am humbled to call my cast and my peers. I am so excited to continue following their careers, and hopefully work with them on other projects in the future!

 Joshua Galvan (Pinocchio)

This was such a hard character to cast, I didn’t know the direction I wanted to go with him. More cartoony, or more realistic child? I could have gone either direction, and maybe been moderately satisfied, but low and behold here comes Joshua managing to strike an incredible balance between the two! It was always a blast hearing Josh’s line reads for Pinocchio, and I’m so glad to have him in the cast. Thank you, Joshua, for bringing some much-welcomed levity to the production with your mopey, son-of-a-bitch puppet boy.

  Steven H.W. Grove (Lord Beast (Human), Bartender)

Steven joined our cast very late in production to take up the role of Lord Beast in his uncursed human form, and as Beauty’s voice actor, I could not have asked for a better scene partner. He brings a real warmth and kindness to the character. He was already being asked to jump in mid-stream and last minute, but he performed beautifully and was incredibly quick with his recording turnaround and grasp of the lines. Thank you, Steven, for your talent and reliability, and for being such a terrific addition to our cast!

  Dale Laakkonen (Boy Blue)

One of the first characters I cast, Dale brought a level of realism to Boy Blue's tone that I hadn’t realized I needed till I heard him. He’s always down to learn and take suggestions, and has a real genuineness about him. His voice for Blue is so warm and nice, and it really mellows out this cast of (I would argue) pretty high-strung and dramatic characters. Thank you so much for being a part of our project, Dale. Your voice has been a really unique and welcome calming addition to the show.

  Jack McCrorie (Prince Charming)

Charming is such an asshat. And despite being very unlike our resident Prince, Jack plays him perfectly.  He brings a smarminess and lack of self-awareness that I have grown to really love. His deliveries are lively and play really well off the other voice actors, especially when he’s paired with some of his three ex-wives. Thank you so much Jack, for bringing that special touch of class to our leech of a prince.

  Dean T. Moody (Mayor Cole)

Dean has completely reprogrammed how my brain hears Mayor Cole. During production, Dean’s always been reliable and enthusiastic, more happy to encourage and carouse with the other members of our cast. I have enjoyed every minute working with this guy. Such a warm and positive addition to our little band of voice actors! Thank you for setting the tone and mood as the very first voice in the production, Dean. You really set the bar high!

  Eric Peterson (Flycatcher, Crispin, and Colin the Pig)

What to say about Eric. Holy crap, this guy’s voice. He plays three separate characters in the cast, and I consistently forget I am listening to the same person. Great comedic timing, and always manages to give me something unexpected and fascinating. I’ve made changes and additions to several scenes in the series because he’s given me line reads that are better than my script! Bravo, sir! Eric, thank you so much for everything you’ve contributed to the show: your voice, your humor, and your wonderful collaborative spirit.

Carson Beck (Kay)

Carson came on about halfway through production (when I realized that Kay was going to be making an appearance in my version of “Legends in Exile”), and I am so grateful to have found him. Just on a technical level, he’s proven his talent again and again. High quality recording, a voice tone that works so well for the character, and most importantly, a great sense of delivery. He’s such a wonderful actor. It was so rewarding to collaborate together on finding the moody, beleaguered tone for Kay, and I couldn’t imagine anyone else playing him.

Carson, thank you so much for hopping into our production midstream, taking the script by the horns, and giving such an intelligent and keen performance!

Alex Cain (Bufkin)

For a minor character that was meant to be a one-off at the beginning of the show, I ended up absolutely falling in love with this little guy (the monkey, I mean :P). Alex brought Bufkin to life with such a sweet silliness. He’s got a wonderful comedic sensibility, and has continued to be surprisingly down for anything I throw at him (see: all the monkey screeches, and that pratfall in Ch 4 was choice). I ended up adding more Bufkin than I intended based solely on Alex’s performance, I so desperately needed more of him in the show.

Alex, you were such a happy surprise when you auditioned, and you’ve proven time and again to be a tremendously valuable member of the cast. Thank you!

Patrick Casao (Jack of the Tales)

Patrick has been an absolute pleasure to work with. Very open to direction and suggestions, and he always took my feedback and just ran with it! And he’s been getting better and better with every episode! Always super expressive and he’s got that Jack whimpering down pat. Very open and interested in getting to know his fellow actors, too. A social butterfly on our cast. I’m so happy that he’s made some great connections with some of the other actors.

George DeLorean (Hobbes, Grimble)

George does things with his voice that make my brain hurt. He’s got a killer instinct for creature voices, and is super intimidating to listen to.  He graciously took the part of our two most inhuman sounding characters (Hobbes, Bluebeard’s goblin butler, and Grimble the doorman who is actually a Troll in human disguise) and very successfully, I think, managed to make them sound like distinct characters. As a voice actor, he’s been prompt, and kind, and very communicative. I am so pleased that we got to work together on this.

Phoenix Emrys (Frau Totenkinder, Gala Waiters)

Phoenix blows my mind with how great her voice is for this part. Just pitch-perfect. She legit creeped me out a couple times with her takes for Frau Totenkinder. She’s been such great support as on some additional minor roles, when she just completely transforms from a witch to a catering employee. I loved hearing so many voices that Phoenix has to offer and was so happy to have such a versatile actor in our cast.

Phoenix, thank you so much for taking Frau Totenkinder to the next level, and making her such an iconic part of our wonderful cast of characters!

Tamara Fritz (Snow White & Rose Red)

The leads in Fables Radio have a LOT of heavy lifting to do in our scripts. Like seriously, at least 50% of the dialogue is split between Snow and Bigby sometimes. And as one of our lead characters, Tamara has really stepped up to the plate with a sharp, high-quality performance, and she’s brought Snow White to life with gravitas and humor and humanity. One top of that, playing her twin Rose Red with such a distinctly different personality and energy just blows my mind with happiness! I am so over the moon to have such a talented voice actor working on our project. Behind the scenes secret: I’ve been a big fan of Tamara’s Dragon Age and Mass Effect impressions for a long while, and actually was what made me think that an audiodrama of Fables might actually work. And what’s more, bringing in Tamara as Snow White was a huge boon to the motivation I needed to get this project off the ground.
