It was the last American piston-engine fighter ordered into production by the United States Air Force.Â
It was originally developed as a very long-range escort fighter for B-29 bombers during World War II, a role that required two pilots to alternate control during long flights.Â
Depending on the variant, it could carry six .50-cal. machine guns, rockets, and bombs, and had a maximum speed of 482 mph
