Republic F-105 Thunderchief, a supersonic fighter-bomber used by the United States Air Force.
Design and Nickname: The aircraft was nicknamed the "Thud" and was specifically designed for supersonic tactical nuclear strikes, capable of reaching speeds of Mach 2.
Payload Capacity: Despite being a single-engine aircraft, it held the record for the largest conventional bomb load carried by such a plane, able to carry over 12,000 pounds of ordnance.
Service History: The F-105 flew the majority of strike bombing missions during the early years of the Vietnam War and was retired from active service in July 1980.
