Trump has authorized a CIA covert operation against Venezuela. His administration has already targeted “drug boats” in the Caribbean. Dozens of people have been killed, and UN rights experts have called the US strikes extrajudicial executions. Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro says it is about taking control of the oil-rich nation. Trump calls Maduro a “narcoterrorist” and has declined to answer if the goal is regime change in Venezuela. Is it just about drugs? Or is something bigger going on that might affect the entire region? And how will Venezuela’s backers, Russia and China react?

Trump claims that these boats are from Venezuela, but the survivors of the unprovoked attack are from Ecuador and Columbia. Drug trafficking is not a capital offense. There is no proof the murdered people were anything but fisherman. The US is repatriating the survivors instead of trying them or even interrogating them as they would if the victims of the attack were suspected of any crimes, them which suggests we are doing this horrific thing to people at random for the pleasure of Dear Leader. Also we have zero right to be using the US Military to do terrorism in International Waters even if they had been doing something wrong.

Khashoggi Killing: UN Rapporteur Callamard Presents Report #ANNnews

United Nations special rapporteur on extrajudicial executions, Agnes Callamard, is set to present her report on the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

In her 100-page report, which was made public a week ago, Callamard says Khashoggi’s killing at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October last year constituted a premeditated extrajudicial killing which indicted Saudi Arabia’s leadership.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for “credible investigations” after at least six people were killed in Kinshasa during the latest crackdown on demonstrations against President Joseph Kabila. Whether he will get it is a different matter.

Guterres said the government should “hold those responsible accountable”, just as the UN peacekeeping mission MONUSCO reported a surge in extrajudicial executions by state agents, notably in the southern region of Kasai. According to MONUSCOs annual human rights report, there were 1,176 recorded summary killings, “including at least 89 women and 213 children in 2017 mostly committed by the armed forces a 25% increase on 2016.

The January 21 protests followed the killing of nine people by the police during similar demonstrations organised by the Catholic Church on December 31.

Kabila is facing mounting unrest over his postponement of elections last year. They are now scheduled to take place at the end of 2018 although few Congolese believe that date will hold either.

Meanwhile, militia groups in the south and east are unifying to force Kabila from power, with increasing numbers of refugees fleeing to Zambia, Uganda, and Angola to escape the widening conflict.
