What does grace look like? Forgiving when you have no reason to. Forgiving when it’s not deserved. Extending kindness, patience— forgiveness when there is no rational reason to. Grace is a flower in the desert. It is a blossom pushing up through the snow. It’s a spring of water in a dry place. It’s life where you think it would be impossible. It’s extending forgiveness to the unforgivable. To the repeat offender. That is what makes grace grace— it is undeserved, but in that very thing it is healing. That is what makes it so very powerful. More powerful than anger or hate, resentment, judgement or unforgiveness. There is no “three strikes and your out” or “this is the last time”. The extension of grace removes that pit from the stomach of the offender. It removes the sting of offense. In forgiving it extends favor. You can’t earn grace. You can’t work for it. It’s a gift. You might deserve pity or for that matter another’s anger or judgement, but never grace. It may not be easy, but good things—truly powerful things—never are. It builds were anger breaks. It heals. It gives life where judgement— even justified judgement —sickens, mortifies—kills. Grace is going ahead again. It is letting go of offense to hold on to relationships. Grace does what nothing else can. Hate cannot. Giving up, casting off, walking away judgement, revenge, resentment, bitterness, contention cannot. Grace can. It not only gives but gives back. Receiving & extending grace makes you humble & happy. Recipients of grace extend it to others. It is a gift that keeps on giving. Grace wins.
