Wishing for Three YA Jinn Novels
In a time of political turmoil, I think it’s important to keep on wishing for a better world. Djinn, Jinn, Ginn and, jinni have been granting wishes and kicking butt for awhile in YA. Within the theme, here are three books that can fulfill most YA fan’s wishes.
Exquisite Captive by Heather Demetrios: Wish for it and you will read of an all powerful, spunky Jinn trying to free herself from endless servitude. The only problem, both her and her sleazy master are immortal. She will do anything to escape, even if it means teaming up with the rebels who lead her into slavery’s hands in the first place. The book deals with intricate power dynamics stemming from race, class, and enslavement (but in an exciting action-packed way). Also, the magic system is seriously compelling and the world building brings it to another level.
Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton:Â If you wish for books about precision shooting girls who escape from small town life with mysterious and equally talented precision shooting boys, well then this is the book for you. On her journey, she is quickly introduced to an unknown side of the world and herself. The characters in this fantastical desert nation are to die for. Also not only are the chase scenes super fun, but the Djinni based twists will blow your minds.Â
As you Wish by Jackson Pierce: Wish for an urban fantasy novel set in high school? This story opens shortly after her childhood sweetheart came out as gay. The protagonist has been wishing for love and summons a jinn and given three wishes. Unfortunately, she falls for him. If she makes her last wishes he will disappear and she will be left alone again. (As an OG YA Jinn read, don’t judge the book by its aggressively 2000′s cover.) Magic, fun, and heart litter the pages of this novel.
These three books all have very different version of djinn magic and definitely appeal to different kinds of readers. One of these books is sure to check something off on your wish list. (Now that I look at them all, I do realize the covers are not the most appealing. It’s probably best to think of them as dull lamps that hold an unexpected amount of magic.) I hope you all have a wonderful time reading!
To have a point, to have a purpose, was its own kind of freedom. Heather Demetrios, Exquisite Captive

Forced to obey her master. Compelled to help her enemy. Determined to free herself.

If you like djinn and stuff have you tried Heather Demetrios? She wrote Exquisite Captive.
Hmmm. A book about djinn. Had to look into it and it seems pretty dark, but I remember hearing about this book before somewhere. Maybe I could edit out the dark parts to ease some of that darkness (me and @lorienkittybooks aren’t super big into really dark books; we’ve got to lighten them up at least a little bit to make them palatable, so to speak) but I’ll definitely look into it because you’re right, I do like djinn. :)
