About to step up my exposure game with this 50w UV LED flood light. The light has a wavelength of 395nm which is (according to my research) optimal for exposing screens at and should decrease my time from around 6/7 minutes (using a 500w halogen bulb) to <1 minute. Once I get it mounted up I’ll do some testing and share the results. One thing I’ve noticed recently is the emulsion on the print side of the screen washes away easily after exposure so hopefully this will cure it more thoroughly as well as being faster. After having conducted the screen exposure step test I can tell you that the UV LED food light is an improvement from the halogen but not as much as I anticipated. I got the burn time down from 6 minutes to 3 (for a 20”x24” screen). I’ve seen people with similar lights burning in under a minute but I can only assume that is because their vacuum units contain the UV rays and focus it on the screen where as mine is suspended from above so the light is dispersed throughout the room. I took the glass out of the light and done another test but this only improved it slightly. My larger 23”x31” screens are now burning at around 10 minutes rather than 20 which is cool (light is suspended higher). When washing the screens out I was putting the jet wash close up and selecting the time where there was no break down so I could probably shorten the burn times if I wanted and not apply as much water pressure. The new light will also save on energy costs. After quite a bit of research online into how far the light source should be from the screen I settled on the formula of 1.5 times the diagonal of the image. I will mainly be burning positives of either A4, A3 or A2 so it was a simple case of finding the diagonal measurements of these sizes and multiplying it by 1.5 to give me the height for the light. With wanting to produce bigger screens I considered using two 500W point light sources to expose them but read that this would actually result in under cutting, meaning light gets under the edges of the black film positive exposing the emulsion and possibly spoiling the final image. Screenprinting is fun and easy and frustrating and impossible, but also very rewarding and soul-crushing. I have a very DIY setup that I need to improve.
