Someone dear to me holds the philosophy that it takes a long time to get to know someone, and therefore withholds locking in a first impression. Although I aspire to that philosophy, I admit the romantic in me wants to be in love with every new thing that comes across my path. I feel it will be no different with Lund.
My first bleary-eyed photographs of this charming, historic, laid-back and yet alive town, will not be enough to do it justice. Being the second oldest town in Sweden, the medieval layout leads the explorer to surprises around every corner. Historic buildings and row houses stand adjacent to every kind of shop and restaurant imaginable, then a park or well groomed common space emerges. Beautiful plazas with cafes that spill onto the cobblestone streets are numerous, and yet there is room for modern amenities with every few blocks in the way of grocery stores and pharmacies. Buses, drivers, cyclist and pedestrians all have safe paths woven through this ancient layout. I find this particularly amazing as I explore more and more of my new hometown.
