The interior of Aspet at Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park in Cornish, #NewHampshire. The park preserves the home, gardens, grounds, and studios of Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848 - 1907), one of America's foremost sculptors best known for his monuments to the Civil War and his designs for the US $10 and $20 gold coins. The site is centered around Saint-Gaudens home, Aspet, which was built as an inn about 1817 and subsequently remodeled to suit his tastes after purchasing in 1892. Saint-Gaudens worked there during the summers between 1885 and 1897. Aspet became his family's year-round residence in 1900. It was named Aspet after his father's birthplace in France. The Cornish Colony of artists developed around the area, including painters Maxfield Parrish, Thomas Dewing, and Kenyon Cox; dramatist Percy MacKaye; American novelist Winston Churchill, architect Charles Platt; and sculptors Paul Manship, Herbert Adams, and Augustus' brother Louis Saint-Gaudens. After Saint-Gaudens death in 1907, his wife Augusta sought to make the property a memorial to her husband and as a place to exhibit his art and educate visitors about his work. In 1919, the non-profit Saint-Gaudens Memorial was founded.
