"Rose, sweetie, time to get up, we're going somewhere special today!" Dawn grinned as she shook her gently.
Rose stirred slowly, her small frame shifting beneath the covers as the first rays of morning light filtered through the curtains. With a sleepy blink, she rubbed her eyes with the backs of her tiny fists, her lashes still heavy with dreams. A soft yawn slipped past her lips, delicate and breathy, as the warmth of sleep clung to her like mist.
"Out?"
She whispered, her voice barely more than a hush in the quiet room. The blanket slid from her shoulders as she sat up, pooling at her waist and revealing the soft cotton nightgown she wore, the only one she could bear against her sensitive skin. It hung loosely on her, worn but cherished, the fabric faded from love and countless washes, its hem brushing gently against her ankles as she swung her legs over the edge of the bed.
