Piri Reis Works at Brussels Library

The world’s well known and reckoned map master Piri Reis work has been showcased in Brussels library at an exhibition. Organized and well managed by Yunus Emre institute, professor Hayati Develi spoke in the exhibition and stated that in respect to know more about the country and people, it is must to discover their cultural backgrounds and lead new friendships and bonds with other established countries.

Words Set Free Exhibition

Freedom of speech is the theme of these fantastic works currently on display in London’s historical printing center, Clerkenwell. The exhibition features lettering from members of the Letter Exchange, a prestigious society with a focus on making words visible and bringing language to life.

I went along this week to view this diverse mix of work, representing all corners of the lettering arts including calligraphy, lettercutting, typography and letterpress. All 24 pieces are uniform in size, measuring 540 x 540 cm square (21 x 21”). I didn't expect this but it provided an approachable commonality to all the pieces on display.

A few of the works that really caught my attention were (from top down, left to right):

hope by Philip Surey: A low relief word sculpture, carved in Yorkstone. This beautiful piece blends the flowing line work and solid shapes of the each letter, placing them into a composition reminiscent of a zen garden.

Free Fall by Annet Stirling. Carved from Pureck Pon Freestone. One half of Incisive Lettering and a student of Berthold Wolpe, Annet explores the boundaries of legibility and abstraction. This piece gives a great feeling of rhythm flowing through the part-formed letters.

Window by Robbie Schneider:  Made of oak This beautiful window lattice screen depicts the words reputedly spoken by the Russian dissident Yelena Bonner: “I just want spring to come after the winter”. She died last year after devoting most of her life to human rights activism.

Cold Fear by John Neilson: Dunhouse Blue sandstone. John edits the Letter Exchange journal Forum and has written this passage which describes the personal experience of people living under a regime bent of destroying their traditions, culture, language and identities. “Where once was fond and carefree talk cold fear now stills not only words but thought itself”.

Conundrum Red: Michael Rust: Lime wood, gold and acrylic, With a studio based in Kent, Michael is also fellow of the Calligraphy & Lettering Arts Society and produces amazing sculptures and lettering.

Gary Breeze: The Quantity of a Hazelnut – a vision of the Earth by St Julian. Welsh slate, oak and paint. I love the second ‘o’ inside the first in ‘looked’.
