Tree shadow in Clerkenwell after work last night.
H then led me to Charterhouse Square, which includes London Charterhouse, which is a complex of buildings in various styles that also served as a priory and was built on top of a plague pit back in the 1300s. While looking at the various buildings in the complex, I was struck by how the building immediately above reminded me of the Wolf’s Head Society building at Yale (yes, one of the secret societies), which kind of makes sense given that Cambridge and Oxford were also huge influences in the design of Yale and Princeton and I can only imagine these central London cloisters were influential too.
Her main motivation for taking me here was to show me Florin Court, a rare Art Deco building in Central London that served as the establishing shot of Hercule Poirot's apartment building for the show Agatha Christie’s Poirot, which ran from 1989 to 2013. It’s a gorgeous building that only eagle-eyed Art Deco fans might clock due to how seamlessly it blends into its surroundings here with the brick facade, at least for me. The curved lines are a dead giveaway when so many buildings are squared as hell, but the mélange of architecture in this square is enough to forgive anyone from not immediately clocking one specific architectural style.
Not far from the Smithfield Meat Market is St. John’s Gate, which is part of what was known as the Clerkenwell Priory, first built in 1504 and the English headquarters of the Knights of the Order of St. John, and now part of the Museum of the Order of St. John. The Order itself is a pan-European organization that originated in Jerusalem during the Crusades, and one manifestation of their work today is the St. John Ambulance Brigade and their current-day eye hospital in Jerusalem. Entrance to the museum is free, and while not all of the buildings were available for us to see that day, it was fun to take a quick spin through it.
It was a neat space to duck into for a bit and learn a bit of history that I was previously unfamiliar with, but we didn’t linger as we had ground to cover.
