My thinking on why there has not been a book or book series about the post-heresy Death Gaurd is that the wirter would probably have to describe some pretty gross imagery for quite a bit of it, Nurgilelites and all that, which could put a lot of people off.
If you haven’t read it already, I highly recommend Execution Hour by Gordon Rennie.
Now, I often recommend Execution Hour because it’s the single best 40k novel ever written, but in this case specifically I recommend it because major enemies of the book are Chaos ships crewed by Nurglites. Rennie hits a great sweet spot of describing just enough yuck without getting into too much yuck, also describing just enough that your imagine takes over and fills in all the blank spots with weapons-grade yuck.
Apart from describing the effect chainsaws and bolters have on people, most of 40k literature tends to be fairly PG-13 in its nastiness, until you pick up an Ian Waston book and ewARESU
