Harnigold's ghost really took him away from the sea, gave him shelter and warm food. He is the part of him that takes care of others, the part of him that makes shoes just so you can walk without hurting your feet. And Ed hates this part of himself, he hates that he cares about things because caring leads to hurt : remove the warmness and coldness becomes harsher than ever. Remove the sweetness and you're left with a weight. If he hates caring, then caring will kill him because it's seems like the merciful things to do now, doesn't it
