One of the first thing Christians do when raising children is to isolate and program their kids to disbelieve facts from the foundation of their "scientific" education by being taught to specifically believe that public schools and the government ARE lying to you right from the start, right there in the classroom. Christian children genuinely believe they are being taught misinformation in school because their trusted adults tell them so. It makes that divorce from reality both EXTREMELY difficult to confront (due to the foundational belief that they are being systematically and intentionally lied to day in and day out) and also central to that person's identity. I really think if we could stop creation fallacy from being the foundational principle taught to children in actual legal schools all around this godforsaken (ba dum tss) country, then we wouldn't be seeing the situation we are in now.

Christian parents are having lots of babies, abusing them, lying to them, and training them that the sky is purple even when everyone else is telling them it's blue, and the only moral thing to do is to keep believing the sky is purple because if you don't, you might lose your afterlife, your soul, your family, your income... your home, probably.

i'm getting recommended articles from chrome all the time about sciencey shit (god knows why), and more often than not it's about our current understanding of something being turned on its head from one new discovery.

think about it for a second. our understanding of the universe is so flimsy, everything the general public takes as common knowledge (the big bang, the evolution of mankind, etc), is constantly being put into question every single day. and still, as a species our hubris is strong enough that we continue to insist on putting all our findings into little boxes, wondering why the ever-changing nature of all that we know keeps falling out of its box.

Apes have 24 chromosomes. Humans have 23. The second human chromosome is actually two-in-one, with each half corresponding to the second and third chromosomes found in ape DNA.

The video goes into detail about the mechanics of a chromosome (the centromeres and telomeres) to explain how the probability of this fusion happening through a random mutation is astronomically unlikely.

What’s easier to explain is that this chromosomal fusion must have happened precisely at the moment of conception, when sperm and egg combined to become a zygote with a single DNA code, for there to even be the slightest possibility that the chromosomal mutation could happen enough times for most of the resulting baby to be made with that mutated code.

This baby would then need to remain genetically compatible enough with the mother to survive nine months of gestation. Ape and human blood types are not sufficiently compatible for that to happen.

Even if we dismiss that and assume the mutant baby survives gestation, after being born this mutant would then need to survive until it achieved breeding age.

But humans and apes cannot interbreed. They are genetically incompatible. There would be no going back from 23 chromosomes to 24.

Therefore, this theoretical mutation could not pass on to another generation unless the mutant also happened to find another breeding-age non-ape with the exact same mutation, within their lifetime, within the same geographical region, within the same continent.

Which is about as statistically likely as the mutation happening in the first place. Which is to say, not very.

And even if somehow two such individuals found each other and survived long enough to have children, those children would still be genetically incompatible with any creatures except their own siblings. So any potential new species would then need to survive the most extreme form of inbreeding.
