What I Hear(d)
It’s interesting to see that new music, in general, cannot be ascribed to one genre. Most new bands are described in no fewer than 2 sub-genres, I was speaking with a friend today who described her band as a blue-grassy, neo-soul, futuro-pop, glam-rock concoction. That’s what happens when children double-barrel their children and so on, ad infinitum. (Not really.) I’m sure there’s a law against infinite double barreling, but I’m down, whatever. The rate at which information is transmitted and ideas are exchanged has increased dramatically thanks to – of course- the Internet, and this relatively recent social media explosion. Music and its definitions are mutating more quickly than it had, say, forty years ago, where you could pretty much put everything into, like, six different categories. Evolution. What happens next? What six categories will music from the 2010’s come under, forty years from now? What’s a genre anyway? What am I even saying?
