it's kind of impressive how dedicated some stories are to giving their female characters no agency. i'm watching third season of alice in borderland and the premise is that our main female character, usagi, has been tricked by a man into returning to the world of death games by dangling in front of her the trauma of her father's passing. this in turn stimulates our main male character, arisu, to actively pursue the same return to reunite with and save usagi, his wife.
this female passivity goes for the smallest of story elements too: a female student is killed by her male teacher in an experiment and although they could have easily suggested intense, equal interest in that project on her behalf, the show zeroes in on the longing looks between them. the longing looks from him towards usagi as he projects his feelings onto a new woman.
the culmination of the show is usagi passed from the arms of one man to another. quite literally. in the whole story which is seemingly grounded in her trauma of losing a father she makes no choice. she is given no choices. she is a daughter, mourning her father. she is a wife, regretful of being taken away from her husband. she is a future mother, bound to fulfilling her duty of protecting the fetus. she is a symbol of a desire for life. but she isn't a person.

> be brought up catholic
> everyone tells you not to sin because it is bad
> don't sin
> go to confession
> have no sins
> no one believes you so you make up sins to repent for
> everyone is happy
> internalize that pretending to be worse at things than you are is good
> 20 years later at job interview
> emphasize the skills that you lack because "being worse at things than you are is good actually"
> exit confessional
> dont get job

I want to still be mad at the movie that came out in 2019 because what do you MEAN Steve lived his life with Peggy instead of, I don’t know, SAVING HIS CHILDHOOD FRIEND FROM YEARS OF TORTURE AND ABUSE?!!
they’re trying to make me thing he didn’t go back to the fucking train. right.
are you kidding
