didn't actually meet until well after high school. even with vylad being a shadow knight. he just never tagged along with sasha and zenix when they went to the mall to see gene

it happened on a warm, foggy summer evening. it had been raining most of the day, and the air was still thick and damp. the sun was at the end of setting, casting shadows full of color. and the birds were quieting down for a peaceful night. but, this summer serenity was interrupted by a loud, splitting crack and a hefty, hard thump. right into someone's backyard

the neighborhood was, supposed to be, mostly empty this summer. everyone else had gone off on a trip to only the best place on earth. thanks for the invite. or at least the heads-up. so, when the sound of something like a bundle of firecrackers going off- followed by the very noticeable yelp of a person- came from their backyard, the shadow knights were more than a little startled by that!

this could be an intruder! a home invader! a thief trying to take advantage of the vacant homes in their neighborhood! and they were trying to hit their home. they couldn't just stand for that! so, they gathered together and, sasha and zenix pushed gene out first.

armed, of course! with a fire poker

first thing he noticed was- of course, because why wouldn't he- that his bushes were a little squashed. aw. goddammit, he had just trimmed those to look li- hoyl shit they're rustling

next, came the groaning. now, usually, gene isn't one to scare easily. but oh my god did the setting with all the long shadows and the fog and the thick warm air making it a little harder to breathe make things just a biiiiit more difficult not to feel like he was in a friday the 13th movie all of a sudden.

he found it hard to want to move his feet. because when He's in a horror movie, he's not an Idiot. so he just stood and stared instead. while the bushes moved more rapidly. clutching his iron fire poker. because that's a smart move that clever people do when they feel threatened

then, finally, out from the bushes and leaves burst a hand! and once gene saw that it was human and humanly-sized, all his nerves stopped shaking up. and then he just got really annoyed. and decided to wait for the intruder to get mostly out of the bush before he beat their ass

following the hand came an arm, and then another arm- jeez they're taking their sweetass time with this- and finally came a head full of wavy brown hair, lifting up to reveal a face- a face he actually kind of recognizes... garroth did love showing off pictures of his baby brothers- or what little he had of them on his phone

turns out, vylad had been looking for garroth's place actually, but wound up in the shadow knights' backyard by mistake. so, they let him crash with them

and it all just sorta developed from there. roommates to lovers, my beloved,, <333

gene fell first, and harder

but vylad was the first to fess up

main form of flirting consists of affectionately bullying each other to their hearts content. and also moments of extreme tenderness and care in ways they didn't know they ever needed before that leave one another completely gobsmacked. like they just had a twisted bone set back into place

oh, and the occasional cheesiest, corniest shit you've ever seen, of course

vylad does most of it; which- although he'd never admit it- always leaves gene flustered

but he contributes to the cheesiness of their relationship too, in his own ways

gene is a cuddlebug. any time they're laying down or sitting together, gene's all snuggled up into vylad's side. vylad's not as cuddly, but he doesn't mind it one bit anyway

but he does have his own moments. which gene fears. (in a good way)

all i'll say is both of them are very thankful that gene is sturdy enough to hold vylad up

they don't have a super noticeable height difference, but vylad is definitely the taller one

they never fight, really. at least, not genuinely. it's always over silly things, and in a silly way that's more like, "i'm not actually mad at you, but just in case i Do have any hard feelings, i'm gonna pretend to be mad at you for a lil bit"

because they both have a bit of the Emotional Wall going on. but they're learning how to navigate that

although, there is at least one exception to not getting mad at each other. when it comes to matters of how each of them view their own self-worth, and how sometimes that can cause some self-destructive habits (it's hard not to get a little annoyed at a person who's shit-talking or harming someone who's basically the light of your whole goddamn world, even if that person is them)

they care a lot for each other. and they're not shy about it.

vylad goes to the café after everyone's come back and settled back in and the shock of not only seeing it as a cute café after only knowing it as a nightclub but also seeing gene in that butler outfit knocks the fucking soul of his ancestor out of him

this is also when garroth and zane realize before vylad even does that he likes gene, when he rejects both of them waiting on his table, and notice how fidgety he is the entire time when he gets laurance as his waiter instead. (because gene went into hiding as soon as he walked in)

vylad is in massive debt to lucinda for cat potions (3 dollar). they like getting up to kitty shenanigans once in a while

they share shampoo because they have a similar (enough) hair type. (gene's is actually a bit curlier rather than wavy, but he likes the way his hair looks when it's slightly fucked up so, go him)

they also share a room, because gene just. stopped sleeping in his

hasn't moved any of his stuff from it, though. so now it's technically the new guest bedroom- but also his closet and "study room"

have a bunch of random shit lying around in there because of vylad's habit to keep everything he owns in one place and also hoard odd things like a crow

vylad is often up to some weird project like growing an illegal endangered plant or making shit out of animal bones or deskinning a furby and gene just always looks at him like "…what the fuck ? <3"

he supports him 100% though

the level of trust they have for each other is something that should be studied.

neither of them had ever really thought about having kids before. at least not in their adult life. when they were a little younger, they had come to their separate conclusions that they would make a Horrible parent and were afraid of completely fucking up, and so the thought never came up again

until, one day one of them sees something that's typically "for kids," and they say out loud to the other "i hope our kid gets to enjoy something like that," and all of a sudden they both Freeze. And look at each other. And then both of them realize. Oh Shit. I wouldn't mind having a kid with this loser at all.

they never do, though. not in the main timeline i envision, anyway. instead, they just have a lot of cats and rescues <3
